Overvoltage

I have a ecliptech shift light on the bike, over the past week ( I know I should of looked at the issue properly before this), the bike has been going in to an over voltage state once at speed/engine working a bit more than idle.

First few times it went after a couple of Ks, but now it is more consistent sometimes not going away in the short commute or only near the end.


Does anyone else know of many 05 600RRs having a failing reg/rec or could this be the battery?

You will need to rewind the stator coils - search for a thread on here some time ago where someone described how they did it.Easy....

If its OVER voltage, I would be surprised if the stator was faulty.

Also, its not that simple rewinding a stator. They have to be dipped and baked properly or they don't survive. There are other issues as well.

Well, actually, what does it is heat. Has your reg/rect got a smattering of dirt on it?

OR, have you left your bike for a while and started it with a slightly dead battery, and charged it up using the bike?

Heat causes it to fail permanently.

It could be just another random failure of it.

As DB said, it is unlikely to be your stator, as a failing stator will give you too few volts, not more.

just replace the rect reg unit before it starts burning through the stator windings, and also battery, as if it overcharges it starts to bulge and bubble and heat up. If that is what the problem is, honda can have 5 or 6 wire rectreg units. Either works, just earth the 6th wire to the frame, if it doesn't have an earth in the loom to hook it to.

Who is cheap. Hence I reqound it myself. I reinsulated the windings, but not baked. It lasted well enough.

Redundancy.
In the (admittedly) unlikely even that one works loose or otherwise fails, there's still a good earth connection.
One could also just connect them to two different places on the frame instead, which (IIRC) is what I did when I rewired my VFR 750's charging system.

I reinsulated the windings, but not baked. It lasted well enough.

What did you reinsulate it with? I had mine dipped and baked, and the glue went sticky straight away. Ick.

A new one was only 160buxish, so I just replaced it in the end. I didn't want to think about melted glue getting through my near-new engine. growl.

Well got round to testing it tonight, all the static tests proved correct.

Runs at 5k rpm with high beam on showed that reg/rec is well fucked. Designed to keep voltage at under 15.5 volts. Initially kept it under this but kept rising, and rose quickly when it was warm to over 17 volts where I backed off.

At low revs it is fineish, but definitely need to replace prior to riding again.
