They kill them,gut em, stuff em, and then film them using stop motion photography.
42 pukekos were killed in the making of that advert.

My understanding is that they were trained by the same guy who organised the dogs for the "bugger" ad. I think that it was the most difficult and time consuming training exercise that he has done.
I am told that he lives out Waiuku way and has done several animal training projects for advertisements.
I may not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I always was.
Mark Vette the animal psychologist trains them.
He owned Hercules the Toyota bugger dog.
