I can help up the girl count. Mrs. B and I are keen this Saturday (no kids for the weekend).

Keen as beans for a Satur"Day" ride as I still haven't got the tail-light working. Kinda means I have an 8 o'clock curfew or whenever it gets too dark...

Saturday 20 Feb Proposed Makara Ride

This Saturday I intend to ride over the proposed route for the upcoming Tuesday 23 February evening ride that caters for slower 250cc paced riders and novices. Other larger bikes are of course welcome.

    Key points will be:

    overall distance and ride time,

    opitional turnaround points,

    road condition/road layout/hazards, and

    rider experience and confidence.

The Tuesday evening ride considering the distance and time, a destination meal break will be later, and therefore riders may want to grab a snack and bring it to the Duckpond to eat before departure.

Tuesday’s Ride - Additional turnaround points include:
Karori: on arrival here the novice riders in particular have the opportunity to turnaround.
Makara Beach turn-off – a decision based on overall time and gathering twilight.

Subject to overall time for the ride this Saturday, then ride for Tuesday evening may only go to Makara Beach and return back through Karori.

The Saturday and Tuesday rides will be at the extreme novice pace and frequent brief stops will be made enroute.

    Saturday Proposed Meeting Points
    Avalon Duckpond
    Ngauranga Caltex

A calendar event and time will be posted Friday Evening.

If you are wanting to be there but cant make the start point, it can be arranged to meet you enroute, e.g. Johnsonville. Saves people having to ride to Avalon if coming from town and tight on time.

Will post up the ride event tomorrow evening for Saturday morning. Caltex service station coming off Ngauranga on way to Kaiwharawhara on your left.

    Appreciate your comments and support.

I'm up for Makara on saturday as long as it's during gentlemans' hours (between 10 and 3 in my book).

Might meet you all at caltex or just hang around the johnsonville end of makara and wait for you guys there.

May I suggest the other way round - starting from johnsonville and heading to karori.

This direction makes those corners on the hill up to karori absolutely excellent. Going uphill, they are some of the nicest sweeping corners around. But coming downhill on them is a right pain as the camber of the road makes you feel like you are battling against understeer all the way to the straights.

But, if I were you I would just do the johnsonville to karori and then turn around on the lookout (before the hill down into karaori) and head back to johnsonville. It's such a great road you might as well do it twice. Otherwise you are spedning half your time just commuting through the suburbs.

Just a couple of thoughts - your ride so whatever you decide is fine. Happy to meet up at caltex if starting from the karori end.

    Cheers

    Ben

Interesting points Ben. I agree it is nice to favour roads and directions we find most easy.

However the types of roads, surfaces, weather conditions, corners, downhills etc that we find personally challenging are possibly ones we could pay a little more attention and practice time to.

When time permits I try to ride the very roads I dislike the most purely to get better, smoother and faster at riding them - all confidence building stuff.

True, and that is a good point - I avoided going down the paekok hill (paraparaumu side) because it gave me a feeling of vertigo the first time I did it (I was thinking about the drop a bit too much). Finally did it again the other week and really rather enjoyed it. Wasn't looking forward to it beforehand but ended up feeling quite impressed with myself.

But, was more so making the point on the direction for the benefit of people new to the makara road. As you know it is quite a tricky little road that seems to have a little bit of everything thrown in. Just want people new to the road to enjoy it on their first go.
