This is a Saturday morning scoping ride for the programmed ride next Tuesday evening.

Avalon Duckpond
Time 10.10am for 10.30am departure
Caltex – Hutt Road Kaiwharawhara
Time 10.45am for 10.50am departure

I have selected the ride to travel south north, enabling the new riders to experience evening inner city suburb riding from the harbour up through Wadestown and over to Karori. The Makara ride terminating at Johnsonville in the later twilight brings riders back to main roads SH1 and SH2.

For Tuesday - I encourage riders to perhaps have a snack before the evening ride.

Well if no-one has binned in the 4 years running then that is a pretty damn good safety record.

It's great that there are now a range of rides to choose from. Seems to be a few regular weekend things in there too.

Can't ask for much more as a biker really. Pity the camera is broken otherwise I'd have a few snaps (damn - just realised the phone could have taken some). Looks like the weather will hold for a few days so should make a nice jaunt Tuesday night.

Thanks for that Dave, to sum up the ride "all good". Time and distance will not be an issue this Tuesday and south to north from Karori end will be fine.

When the ride occurs again in March, from the Johnsonville end, perhaps given the diminishing daylight then a turnaround at Makara Beach back to Johnsonville could be an option.

Well the unexpected ride after the stop today at Glenside cafe saw me and four of the guys carry on back over the Haywards Hill across to Silverstream, up Blue Mountains Road, out past Short Straw cafe, then Whitemans Valley, Mangaroa Valley, Maymorn, Te Marua, Mangaroa Hill, Wallaceville Hill, and then Burger King Upper Hutt. By the time everyone gets home ( Clint with a wasp visitor in the helmet and sting on the chin) it will have been a 150km plus ride (to Castlepoint equivalent).

Enthusiastic comments from these new riders, and they are already talking of setting up their own weekend morning ride come winter.

One bike maintenance observation: Regular clean and lube on the bike chain, several bikes had lube splatter across rear rim and tyre wall, while one chain had not seen any lube for many moons. Wipe over chain with kerosene moistened rag to remove road grime and lube, then use good chain lube spray. Wipe clean rim and use clean rag to wipe tyre wall. The often found and expressed difficulty 'my bike doesn't have a centre stand, and I haven't got a paddock stand...'

A blue dome day and an enjoyable ride. Thanks for the company and now you have some new found regions to explore.

That was a great day out. Cheers Guy for showing us the Blue Mountain ride, that's great having a new place to play.
I'm enjoying riding with this bunch. All good folk and at a good learning pace.

Cracker day for it too.

I would recommend cleaning the chain every say 1000kms (taking my queue from the Suzuki manual) and as you stated Guy, it pays to clean up splatter too. It is time consuming to do without a centre stand, lift or paddock stand (I do mine on a side stand) but its not the sort of thing anyone should neglect for too long.

I hope the weekend ride is a Saturday!
