Smile After several parts for black 1988 GPX250

    Hi there

Just thought I'd put the word out to one & all to see if anyone could help me out or point me the right direction of what I'm after??? I had a bad run in with a west auckland bike mechanic shop when my GPX broke down last year (stopped working due to low compression, paid $400 to have her looked at & was quoted at over $1000 to have her fixed). Opted not to go ahead and get her fixed at the time & organised to have her towed from the shop (as I'm a AA member), but when I turned up with the tow truck, she was handed back to me in bits & pieces (as they didn't put her completely back together again) & it ended up that i was left with missing nuts & bolts. Anyway, don't really want to dwell on the negative, the positive is that she's up & running again now, as I found a 2007 engine with only 4,000kms on the clock, at a wreckers down the line & thanks to the help of a friend, had the engine put in & she's working sweet as now. The downside is, that due to not having the right bolts, in particular the upper faring allen bolts (that attaches to the petrol tank), longer bolts were put in & they ended up piercing the inner lining of the tank. Not aware that this was the case, when I got her back & filled her up, petrol was pissing out the upper faring bolt holes & consequently caused the paintwork on the faring to bubble. Also, though as I mentioned before, the engine is working sweet as now, my friend whom put her together, wasn't really familiar with the handling of fibreglass farings & ended up putting a couple of cracks in some places & breaking off corners in others. How could I be angry at him though, as he's helped me so much in getting my bike back on the road & running again.

Anyway, sorry to go on, but I love my kwaka & riding so much, it just about killed me for those few months when she was off the road, driving around in the cage was not only frustrating but very expensive as well. I'm ultimately after the following, so my baby can be back to the same sort of resemblance as when I first got her; a replacement petrol tank, a left & right wing mirror, front faring & side farings (that attached under the seat), an engine cover & a seat. I have asked around a few wreckers in Auckland, but wasn't successful.

I've attached pictures to an album in my profile, but she's basically all black, with two red stripes going up each side. If there's anyone out there that can point me in the direction of where i would be able to obtain these replacement parts, that would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for listening

What happened to the wing mirrors, fairings and the seat? Your post is rather long winded and hard to understand. I understand you need a new tank as the current one is punctured but i don't understand why you need the other parts.

If the fairing is cracked then get it plastic welded. New plastics or even second hand plastics are expensive. Wing mirrors and seat shouldn't be too hard to find. Try calling this guy http://yellow.co.nz/companies/Motorc...1132_1187.html

If your seat is ripped then fix it don't get a new one.

    What happened to the mirrors?

Do you need new bolts? I have a bolt kit for this bike that i haven't got around to using. I could possibly sell it if you need it. It has bolts that will not puncture the tank.

The bike was dropped on both sides (on a gravel road whilst stationary), a couple of years ago on a road trip & the plastic around the arm of each wing mirror popped off.

The front faring has a broken bracket on the lower right side (where the belly pan screws through to the faring) & is cracked & paint is now bubbled where the petrol was leaking out of the upper faring bolts (i now have the right bolts), so I'd really like to get that replaced. The side farings (under the seat) have had their retaining clips snapped off, so can't be properly secured & are currently held together by other means, which keep the faring secured to the bike, but isn't appropriate in a practical sense.

The seat has a rip in the material, though I have given that a temporary fix, so as it won't rip any further in the meantime.

I admit the wing mirrors & the seat are purely a cosmetic fix, but the broken bracket on the faring means the belly pan is not as secure as it could be & is lop-sided looking, but that is also due to the fact that one of the corners of the belly pan was broken off during re-assembly of the bike.

I figured seeing that she has a new lease of life with the 07 motor, (which i actually got through your suggested contact, Wayne at Bike Busters in Ngaruawahia) I thought I'd start looking around for those other parts & hence put this post up in KB.

OK 1)the tank with still be leaking now even with shorter bolts. I've got a fix for you that you will find acceptable in the short term and possibly in the long term to be honest.
    2) all the listed damage to fairings and stuff you would be bettter off getting them professionally repaired. Theres a very very good repair guy in henderson.
OTHERWISE--give the bloke at Bikebusters a yell. he has wrecked a few GPX250/ EX250's (same bike different name) and you might even find that he has everything you need and you could modernise the look of your paint job too

I guess you are talking about the little black tabs on the fairings that can break off easily. You can get a new one made up for about $20. You can probably also get a plastic welder to make up the missing peice in the belly pan depending on how bad it is.

New fairings will set you back over $500!

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, i was aware that even after obtaining the correct allen bolts for the upper faring wouldn't resolve the actual leak. Was gonna try & silicone it up, but wasn't quite sure how to go about it. Am keen to hear about your short term/long term fix for that tank. What do you suggest?

Yeah I've emailed Wayne at Bike Busters & he's got nothing in stock at the mo, but is is keeping an eye out for me.

Also keen to grab those contact details off ya for the repair guy in henderson too.

    Thanks again )

I used to use Buckets and Bits when I restored a bike in the past. I found them fairly good to deal with

OMG gutting (yet epic) story! funny how there's only one west auckland shop that I can think of and this wouldn't be the first horror story like this that i've heard..... you'd be surprised at what can be done, especially if you have a fibreglass fairing.

Slyer had the same tank problem and has now in the course of "fixing" his gpx replaced every component including chassis and engine, so PM and see if he's got any spares

silicone will dissolve in petrol - what you want is araldite or another epoxy that will stand up to oil/petroleum based solvents - this will mean an empty tank for at least 24 hours while it sets so do it on a weekend

frosty may have a better fix though...

Hey evee, i might have some of those parts, pm me if you like.
Polyester resin like you would use for fibreglassing is also impervious to petrol ands sets in about five minutes, which is convenient.

Silicon wont fix it. You need to use a two pot epoxy
