Yeah, Ford stuck the name 'Consul' on a few models for some reason.

Mk I Cortinas were also badged Consuls for some reason. I had the 1275 with a column shift and it threw a rod up the mad mile in Kapiti.

They most certainly were not Mk I Consuls.

Me and a mate had mk1 consuls at the same time, his was a big rounded lumbering cloud of oil smoke and mine was the sleek looking cortina one. my one handled better too.

Yip.. The Granada was the name of the 1972 European model that was made in Germany and known as the Consul almost everywhere else. Their V6 came in lots of versions and unlike Leyland, you only needed one socket for the same part throughout the entire Ford range (almost).

Sounds like a great plan and strategy to me

The Essex engine was the Dagenham lump. It ran for years and there were so many variants of it. Once the battle between England and Germany was was settled, the future was reshaped with Dagenham gradually diminishing its role before eventually closing down.

I see the Aussies are suffering the same fate http://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/8708...plant-closures which is a shame because the Ford quality will suffer for the sake of a cheaper cost base.

then you had the Consul 315, which wasn't quite a Cortina , or like anything else really. Click image for larger version.
