    Any simple test for this?

I took the breather-hose off the carb and while it seemed to raise the idle-speed a bit I struggled to tell which had vacuum - the carb fitting or the breather hose.

Was watching talking trucks again last night and they had a Centinel(sp) truck on that I had never heard about before. It had its motor half way down the chassis, which I have never heard of before. Cant find stuff all on them on the interwebs though. Also a 1929 Foden steam truck, I thought steam went out a lot earlier than that, but apparently petrol and diesle vehicles were rather expensive to purchase , so some manafacturers were still dabbling in steam. Made me laugh the total loss of oil system though. You would never get away with that now, Imagine the carnage you would create on the road with all that oil pouring onto the road.

WTF, Picture wont show. Was a real nice Velox too.
Try this for some info on Sentinel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentinel_Waggon_Works

Also a few vids on utubery:

Bloody marvelous things steam powered vehicles - what about the Doble...

The Mini and 1100/1300 have a seal, the other A blocks just have a reverse worm, pretty common on older design engines - the Hillman Hunter had one for it's timing cover oil seal, and because the cover had to be centralised gave a lot more problems. There is a kit, but needs an engine rebuild. The engine is probably just rooted. I don't know what sort of breather system is fitted to your engine, but BMC never used a real PCV valve - I'd toss what ever it has and fit a fat PCV valve for some flow.

    Ta Motu, appreciated!

It's a '79 ute and the original motor, I'm not sure how many km it's done but the motor ticks along really well, uses virtually no oil (until now!) and hot or cold (with a bit of choke on a cold morning) starts on the first twist of the key.

The breather is a fat metal tube mounted vertically on the timing cover with a hose running from the top of it to a brass fitting on the carb.

Looks like a rear-seal gone awol but i'net search indicates the suckers don't have a 'real' crank seal at the back and rely on a good vacuum for the PCV system.

Any one of you British Leyland fruit-loops know about these things.?
You sure of where its coming from and that it is engine oil and not gearbox oil? Oil leaks can be a curse to find if the engine is not clean. Wreckers will probably give you PCV valve for nothing, espessially if ya turn up in the patrol car.

Yeah, engine oil, no smell and sems to come (mainly) from behind a plate that runs long-ways from the back of the sump to the bell-housing.

Getting a PCV valve is no problem, the worry is why the sudden decline in oil control??

Mains may be on the way out, I would try your hardest to find out exactly where it is coming from before starting anything else.

I was taken for a run in a stanly steamer a few years ago at a VCC meet. They were suprisingly fast as a steam engine develops full torque right from stand still.

    4.0 or 4.2

Guys, I'm going to be in TVR Griffithland at the end of the month and will be hunting prey. TVRs are not as cheap as I would like, but these are:

The body kit cost around NZ$7k, so provided the engine's OK, I can go for a not so good body.

I realise that XK8s need permission to import, due to the weak plastic bumpers, but I was just wondering if anyone had any knowledge about the 4.0 lump in most of these?
