The Daimler engines would have a cyl head more like a BSA than Triumph - long and short pushrods, the Triumph was twin cam. There were 2 engines, the 2.5 and a 4.5, and I don't think motorcycle parts were used in either. The Daimler was a nicer car to drive than the Jag, the lighter engine made for lighter steering, and all the ones I drove were auto, most MkII Jags were manual, and the Moss gearbox was as slick shifting as a Bedford.

1986 Low Compression Esprit Turbo JPS Black & Gold.
I had it Blueprint tuned 155mph at least once per week. A real supercar. Beautiful leather throughout.
Very very fast and conered like it was on rails. BUT 1st & 2nd gear only in town. Hard work at low speeds and a permnent back ache. But lots of fun too![]()
Schoolmate's dad was ex Browns Lane engine shop. Had been brought out to look after the Tojeiro jag and walked into a job here as Archibalds workshop foreman. He swore by the small V8, as you say the lighter front end was magic in that shell. The Moss box could be good with the right mods. We had a manual 2.4 and an auto 3.4 at the same time - Mk 2's - and someone had played with the flywheel weight of the 2.4 and tweaked the box too. it was actually quite good.
The big V8 is rare here - only in Daimler limousines and possibly armoured cars ?

In San Francisco at present, arrived Sunday afternoon and walking from tram to accommodation walked past several BMC products parked for a car show at the local street fair: an Austin A35 van still rhd, 2 x Morris 1000 Travellers both LHD and a couple of other oddities including an Amphicar.
Even more off topic: while in Seattle walked into the Tesla HQ car sales and got to see the sports version chassis - beautiful engineering and to sit in an 'S' model... wasn't allowed a test drive![]()
Not british leyland, but british...haven't seen one of these for sale for a while. Wonder what sort of money the capri would go for
