We had an Austin 1800 ute as a shop hack for some years. The 1800 was one of the first cars with radials as original fitment, they were never intended for cross plies, but there were no heavy duty radials, so the ute had Xplies. The front wheel drive BMC's were bad understreerers, the ute on X plies was in a whole new world - a full half turn on corner entry, you just kept turning the wheel until it started to turn in. And yet I still managed to cross it up and even do a 180 a couple of times - with a full tank fuel would leak out of the filler cap and onto the left rear wheel and the back would let go. On such a chronic understeering car snapping into full lock oversteer it was not what you expected.
I worked for this firm several times, served my apprenticeship there, and seemed to keep going back. The 1800 ute got really rusty, and as the boss was building a boat he wanted to keep it, so one time I was re employed just to fix the rust. I fitted a whole new right hand sill - it was huge, complete with door frame. I also cut out the floor and fitted 2 new 16 gauge floor panels each side. I also made a rear pillar....and then painted it. Took me about 6 weeks, a shit load of welding with a gas torch in the days before MIG welders. Ended up staying for another 12 months, left, and went back again a year or so later.
