That's the 3 litre hemi head engine, I used to look after one, and had the head off once. They are really nice, and I think I saw it a couple of weeks ago - there must've been some big Rootes get together before Easter as I saw a lot of Hillmans and Humbers heading south, and I certainly saw a late model Supersnipe.

Is that the motor with the oddball crossed pushrods like a prewar Delahaye ?

I have a friend who used to buy snipes, super snipes, etc in bulk for next to nothing. They got smashed in demolition derbies at Te marua speedway. Yes, a true philistine.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

Hemi means the valves are disposed at an angle, where as in a normal car of the era the were upright.
The Daimler V8 were basically a few triumph twin heads added together. Still poos, but better than most of the other poos car head designs of the era.
The valves are displaced to wide apart resulting in a crap domed head ie it was impossible a decent amount of compression without a huge dome which because of its shape needed a huge amount of power killing ignition advance.
Good points are Yes They can fit in huge valves, Granted Triumph motorbikes went well, in spite of this, mainly because they had two cams so the overlap could be adjusted easily.

Late model Kawaskis Z1 and GPZ (as well as the Harley XR750's Believe it or not) basically perfected the designed with narrower angles and squish with plenty of turbulence.
None of these are as good as a ken Duckworths shallow angle low domed high comp 4V designed head,(Cosworth) which was subsequently copied by everyone from Ducati to Honda.

If you look at Moi's link, you will see the Humber has flat top pistons, that's what these heads were designed for. Far better than BMC's Westlake head with it's couple of dozen patent numbers printed on the rocker cover. An excellent design for the era, and a major advance on previous Super Snipe engines....more power from less capacity.

Alan Norfolk of Norjo Motors in chCh used to run a 929 wagon. It came close to being written off at an early Classic register meeting at levels.
Howard Anderson was starting a Goldie on rollers, it fired, the clutch cable broke and he rode it up the passenger side of the 929...
With Mrs Norfolk sitting in the passenger seat...
No injuries, Goldie was fixed and racing that day, and I used to see the 929 around ChCh quite often after Alan sold it.

Surprised that any 929 has survived, they only lasted as long as they did because the paint held the body together - those early Jap cars were bigger rust buckets than any British car.
