    Puke trackday sat 14th May

Well just wanted to share my track day at puke yesterday.
Started off a nice day & i knew many riders were going on the 22 ride so i thought it'd be nice & quiet. i was feeling pretty rusty & got down there at 10 & was the first bike to arrive. decided to check my pressures & let some air out, but let too much out, doh!. i shot off to the service station to get air & accidentally pushed my bike off it's stand & it fell against a brick wall! arrrgh! i get back to the track & a guy who always passes me with ease (sometimes up the inside within inches) had arrived & i was thinking 'ohhh nooo' 8-(. I always get nervous when the fast racer guys are around & although i hold my line i always get a fright when they 'cut me up'.
anyway i let too much air out of my tyre again! so had to borrow a foot pump from the fast guy & sort out the pressures. then he turns to me & says "there's some FAST guys here today, hold your line & don't look in your mirrors under any circumstances" & i'm thinking holy shit! here we go.... anyway i hung around waiting for the first session & when it was nearly time to go out i started up my bike & realised i'd lost one of my ear plugs & i'm thinking to myself "today is turning out to be one of THOSE days", then i look & what do i see coming out of pit lane up to the start grid? non other than the BRITTEN! i feverishly hunt around in my bag & realise I've left my camera sitting on the dining table at home aarrrrggh! Now I am getting really nervous but trundle up to the lineup parking a respectful distance back from it. WOW!!! i think to myself as i am sitting behind the britten. next thing i see is this red bike/red leathers dude pull up ahead of me & i spy LOVE across the back of the leathers & by now I am absolutely shitting myself trying not to hyperventilate too much seeing as I am the only one on a road registered bike...(thinking wtf am i doing out here???)
off we go down the front straight I am the last to leave & settle into a slow warm up pace lasting 3 laps, then when the track is clear up ahead & behind i start to have some fun. i go faster & faster & soon I am seeing 299 on my speedo & I'm stoked! then the chequered flag drops to come in & I'm happy as. the next session was even better. i talked to the britten rider for a while which was great & i followed the britten for 3 laps(one of the biggest highlights of my riding life!). he was going slow so after 3 laps i decided to go past(man i felt stink about that, thinking how disrespectful that was) but i found out later they were running it in.
basically the whole day was awesome, 4 sessions & only 5 bikes all day! one racer guy lapped me me doing 1.01s which was amazing to see. then he came & said g'day & complimented me on 'having it under control' which gave me a massive big head. he also said the guy riding the britten was a 70's legend (hugh something). then to top it off i was catching the guy that had previously blown me away so i came home exhausted & humungously satisfied...
    i'm still buzzing 8-)... what a day!

so who was on the Britten, anyone know? Would it have been Hugh Anderson?

750Y - I think if it were me I would have packed up and gone home around the time I let the tyres down for the second time - well done for hanging in there!

it might have been Hugh Anderson(rings a bell). he was in his 60's with smoked glasses. the racer guy said he was a legend in the 60's & 70s'.
They were preparing the britten after a rebuild, for a commemorative display lap at the Isle of Man this Year. Strangely enough, that morning I had been watching some on-board Britten footage from 95 with Shaun Harris riding.

also forgot to add, the 'fast guy' who lent me the foot pump also set up my front suspension for me as he said it was bottoming out so thanks to that guy whoever it was. (Never exchanged names)

LOL Hey cool write up and great to hear you had a blast at Puke and how awesome to be following the Britten around and to be able to tell your grandkids you out dragged the Britten down Puke's straight when you take them to see the one in Te Papa!!
We had a cracker day at Taupo on Sunday too -see pics on this forum and hopefully see you there next time MR 299 I'm a bit slow -YEAH RIGHT! You'll be on the next Tui ad.

Hey Dave, didn't see this thread before, prolly cause I was too caught up with other matters.

Nice one mate! You've got nothing to be nervous about and I am glad you realised that towards the end of the day. Sounds like you went real well, any idea about the times you were putting down?

Fuck, its anoying when you drop your bike off the stand, ain't it?

I have no idea what the times were but You can relax I'm sure they are pretty pathetic compared to the racers like yourself. Yeah, pushing the bike over was pretty stoopid, it musta looked funny to the people at the servo.

If you were ringing the nuts of your gixxer thou at it's limit of 299, I'd say you were going pretty DAMN QUICK! Anywho, you arent racing so you don't need to worry about lap times too much. Just as long as you had blast, that's all that matters!

He won the world GP championship a total of four time in both 50cc and 125cc classes
