This elephant's name is just too...

I had to read the article this afternoon on the wee elephant calf born at Taronga zoo which had been thought to have died in the womb. Lovely story - sadness at the thought of a stillborn baby elephant, then great happiness to discover that it was indeed alive.

Unfortunately the name of it's mother just bemused me. She is an Asian elephant called Porntip. I mean to say, my mind just goggled. Unusual images not usually associated with elephants stampeded through my head and I had to do something else to get away from it. So I came here. Didn't do much good 'cos now I'm writing about it.

Surely it wouldn't have been named that by Australian zoo staff? One assumes it came from Asia and already had the name. I just think it's one of those unfortunate word things but which, for all I know, could mean "glorious queen of the elephants" or something. Just doesn't look right though. Hmmmmm. Does anyone else find it strange, or is it just me?

Thanks Deano. I assumed it probably was*; I've always found languages interesting in terms of how people of different nationalities find things in other languages funny or offensive or plain weird.
Assuming the elephant came to Australia already with that name I suppose it might have been confusing to rename it; but if it was born in Australia and given that name (in an English speaking country) I just find that bemusing.

Comes down to word association, and maybe that just shows the problem is mine!

*unless you were being ironic, given the word association with Thailand....

If so, then all I can say is that being back at uni has fried my brain - I don't usually fall for those kinds of pranks.

Not sure about the spelling but it sounds real. A favourite Thai condiment is "Nam Prik". Makes me wonder if Porntip likes a bit of Nam Prik now & again. I should say so.
