Why can't my Jog go faster than 53?

    Hi,

So I've got a 2007 Yamaha Jog. I've owned a previous jog, and have felt the current one lacks the acceleration and speed that the previous one had, but that is hard to prove. I did however remember the needle on the old one getting up to around 60kmh, where this one only gets to 55.

I measured its max speed on a straight today with gps, and its only 52-53kmh (although the needle reads 55). It seems that at this max speed, the computer is doing some sort of rev-limiting too, as the engine sounds different... kinda like fast "missing".

I've checked a couple of things, and found no restrictor in the front of the exhaust pipe, and no spacer between the front variator pulleys. Everything else appear standard.

Does anyone have any idea's what to start tinkering with? Or does this sound normal?

I find I'm actually holding up traffic on the flat, as most cars do 55-60 around the city.

I know about uprated variator kits, etc, but feel a stock Jog should get up to just under 60, not 53.

    Thanks for any help
    Chris

It's the economy. You'll get the extra 7km/h back once we are fully out of the recession.

Haha, yeah I'm a fussy bitch.

I'm 70kg, but topspeed should care about that. Unless my head is shaped like a sail ;-)

Well if you were a hundy kilos then I would be blaming the loss of speed on weight!

The CDI has a rev limiter, the exhaust has a washer by the barrel to restrict flow, the air-box has flow restriction, the front pully is small to limit gearing, the drive belt is short to limit travel....

A standard jog moped is strangled to make it "safe" to travel in traffic that has no physical restriction especially as its limited to around 50-55kph but speeding tickets don't get issued under 60 for anyone else.

    Knock the washer out...free
Change the front variator and use lighter roller weights...bit over $120
Over size belt I think its a 788mm instead of 782mm $75 only change at the 6000 k service.
    to get you over 65-70kph
When rear tyre is munted change to a 100/90 instead of the 90/90 will give you another 3kph.
Small numbers I know but it makes a big difference.

Anything done to the air box or changing to a pod filter (more induction noise) will require larger jet.

Yep, knew about the washer... it's gone. Last owner said the blacks ones never had washers ???

Thanks for the other info. Purhaps the belt and/or rollers are worn. I may as well get a high speed variator kit and belt (bit expensive for a belt isn't it?).

Is Scootling the best/only place to get this sort of stuff in Auck? Ebay kinda confuses me, with all the variations of stuff. Prob best to buy locally, then can return if doesn't fit, right?

Go and have a chat to Andreas @ Scootling and get some prices and model numbers, then compare them at other web shops. The best I have used is in Germany - www.sip-scootershop.com but I have a better contact in Australia for belts, PM me and I will send you details of them. :-)

Smaller, cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, wife can ride it (50cc), something cool about riding a bike round the city with a piston the size of a penny. I've got my F650 for hooning, but I prefer to commute on the Jog.
