    Want to run a Marathon?

FIRSTLY, anyone who knows me will say "what is this joker thinking of!"
    So no jokes please :P

Is there anyone in the Wellington area who would like to, or who does run marathons? It is one of my goals in life to run one, and I'm going to make a start on it now. I do 98% of my training at gym, with the occasional long run on the road every now and then. I'm not really looking for a training partner for every single day (unless you want to), but more someone to be motivated by, and possibly to offer motivation to...

In not at my "fittest" at the moment, but in about a month I should be. At that point, I'm almost able to run a half marathon (about 21.1 kms I think), so my training would go from there to my goal of 42.2 kms.

I'd be looking at entering a full race from November on. Of course, I'd be happy entering shorter races in the mean time, for practice. I don't always have the motivation to get to gym, but when I do I love running. Those Nike adds really hit the nail on the head with their ad campaigns along the lines of "it's just you and the road" type thing.

So, for increased fitness and also plain enjoyment, give me a yell if anyone's interested.

    Thanks.

have done a few marathons in the not too distant past. Best idea would be to track down a contact for the Wellington marathon Clinic ( try the Public Relations Office or whatever they call themselves now ). They are pretty good guys and guyesses and there is always a group to suit

I'd be keen to do a half - they are hard work & involve lots of prep. My Aunty ran a half a few years back and she actually ran the full 21kms before the marathon cos they say the last 3kms are the worst. I think Novemeber may be too soon for me though and I'd be really, really slooooooooooow.

Ummm...ajturbo used to run marathons & MrCSL runs too. I'd be keen to train with ya if nothing else, cos I'd like to get a lot fitter!

Check out www.coolrunning.co.nz for calendars of events in NZ, and some of the sites for events have really good training schedules to build up to 1/2 and full marathons.

Joining a running club is a good idea, and I used to run with the Wellington Marathon Clinic (http://www.wmc.org.nz/site/club/home.php), provides good motivation and you gain some really good tips frm experienced runners. When I went along they have various groups that would run at various speeds and distances, so it suited almost anyone.

Biggest tip I ever got was to find a good pair of shoes that suit your foot and running style. Best to go to the Shoe Clinic for this (even if you don't end up buying from them), as they do a foot scan etc.

I'm on a course at the moment run by the president of the wgtn marathon club (or whatever they call themselves). Totally un-fitness related course I should point out. Can pass on his details if you want them? He can probably suggest a few people to talk to.

Would love to do it myself, an ironman by 30 was my goal, then it got watered down to a triathlon... now with 5 months to go it's just a run. Distinct lack of personal time to put into the training myself.

And yes - I definitely agree with Bear - good shoes good shoes!

the Wellington Half Marathon is always mid June and I am sure they have a 10 k race ( or walk ) as well. anyone (almost )that can throw a bike around has got enough basic fitness to do a 10k and the hoopla of an organised event is enough to give you a bit of extra energy . The Palmerston half is in August and is the best one in NZ but I'm biased

Can't help you as a training partner Dave, however, good bastard that I am, I'm happy to ride the R1 along behind you, occasionally prodding ya with a big stick.

    Fuck I'm good to you.

If your interested there is the Taupo 1/2 (and probably full) marathon in August (not sure exact date). I am planning to go down and do it as long as its a Sunday. I need an event to get me motivated to do any decent exercise

Not sure where you will be up to, but if you want to run with me and a mate, we're aiming to beat 1hr 38min for the 1/2.

    Good luck,
    Might see you there

    marathons

I am firmly of the belief that exercise is only for fit people!!

I was born with a fixed amount of heartbeats, so why the hell use half them up playing sport etc??

Healthy people must get so pissed off when they die of....nothing!!!

Anyway I get enough exercise by jumping to conclusions, flying off the handle, raising my voice & leaping in where angels fear to tread

If you're born with a fixed amount of heartbeats then exercise will allow you to live longer. Let's say that your resting heart rate is 70, over a day this would amount to 100,800 beats.
If you exercised for an hour per day (let's say heart rate = 140 bpm), with the result of your resting heart rate decreasing to 55, then you would only use 84,300 beats per day.
This would be a saving of 16,500 beats per day, from my quick calculations over a twenty year period this saving gives you an extra 1428 days (or 3.91 years).

Yes, I have little to do at work at the minute.

That's a brilliant argument there Bear except we're all forgetting that by extending your life you spend a greater number of years sitting in an old folks home boring people with stories of when you used to ride a bike before nursey comes along and wipes yer bum!!

No thanks ... I'll take the heart attack at 50.

    Shoes

I agree, which is why I already have 2 pairs of shoes from Shoe Clinic, after getting the foot scan. Best running and tennis shoes I've ever had (although I haven't actually played tennis in them yet...)

A bit dear, but worth it.

I won't bother joining a club, I'll do research online if need be. Already been to the coolrunnings site, quite useful. I'd rather train alone if noone here is interested.

(Anyone want to ride their bike JUST infront of me, dangling Carbon fibre parts for my R1???? )
