Camping, easy as pitching a tent?

Hello, you've changed the theme while I've been gone.

Miss Xwhatsit decides she wants to go camping (just overnight) before summer ends. We went to Shakespear Regional Park last year for the day and it was nice.

We (naively) thought it might be possible just to set a tent up somewhere on a nice bit of grass and stay the night. I look on the ARC's website and see all sorts of mentions of campgrounds and booking and it would seem that the campground at Shakespear is booked out this weekend.

Is a grumpy ranger going to wake us up at 5am and yell and kick us out? Is just setting up a tent somewhere a very naughty thing to do?

Nah, just go for it. It will be sneaky and naughty - you both will love it, lol.

You can hide is some very small gaps with the bike, so no one will even know you're there.

    Do it.

"What Steve said pretty much summed it up."
"I did axactly as you said and it worked...!!"
    "Wow, Great advise there DB."

Take a recording of a pump action shotgun with ya... and iffen ye gets any unwanted visitors... just press play ... honestly though, dunno, would be surprised if you were allowed to just get away with it in this day and age... shame, but Good luck...

Where's the flaming quick reply thing gone.

OK so it sounds like I'll be beaten with a rake. One of those `in this day and age' type things.

Oh well I'll have to postpone it until I can get a booking. Doesn't seem very nice to stay in a campsite though with motorhomes and things like that. Quite liked the idea of spending the night somewhere nice and secluded and peaceful with nobody around.

Nooooo... head for a national park, find the warden, explain to him that you just want to camp where there's peace and quiet. Give him $100 bucks or something (the wife maybe, who knows) if he gets pissy... am sure he'll understand the ideal that you're looking for... may even suggest a spot... failing that, do it anyway (might be worth checking fines first heh)

Sullivans bay is a great place to camp, as is Tawharnui Regional park. They are freedom camps, only long drops but clean. Look at ARC Parks for details. I will have a hunt for you. Grumpy ranger will kick you out of the Wenderholm park if you are not in a campervan. Rodney District is one of the few places that you can freedom camp for up to 3 nights as long as you have a toilet with you

    Probably.

Move to the Mainland and then you can camp pretty much anywhere you like.

Really? Cool. The surf there last weekend was divine!
Whereabouts in Tawharanui are you allowed to camp... is it in that bit before the electric gate?

Now he asks technical questions I live here, I have not camped there, but I here tell it is easy peasy. Um, best I go look for you, but yes, apparently, you sign in and just go find a place to stop.
