Custom ignition system

Hay guys Just thort I would share with you my quick fix that I did to the NSR's ignition system.

Basicly I was to impaitent to hunt down replacement Ignition coils so I decided to use parts that I had sitting around from other projects.

The items I used are: 2x Nissan 300zx coil packs, 2x cheap repco sparkplug leads and two plugs with pigtail wires from the old 300zx loom.

Me and a mate did abit of research before I attempted this basicly making comparisons between the old and new coils to prevent any possable damage.

To start with I striped back my old 300zx loom and removed two coil pack plugs with a good length of wire behind them, after figuring out the correct way to wire the lot together out came the soldering iron and abit of heat shrink insulation, Im happy with the way the new addition to the loom looks and it is nice and strong

The next part was to adapt the sparkplug leads to the coils, to do this I removed half of the metal tip that would plug into a dizzy as it was too long and then compressed it untill it was the right diameter to suit the coil pack, they sit very well in the coil without the risk of coming loose but just to be sure I will attach the rubber insulator to the coil.

The last part was easy useing the existing mounting brackets attached to the 300zx coils I bolted them together and then to the frame, I do have a rather budget way of telling what new coil plug goes to the bottom cylinder so not to mix them up this is just a bit of tape lol.

This system works and I believe it delivers a stronger spark to the cylinders, some people wont agree with what I have done but I dont reli care

The bike starts very well now and idles with no choke even cold, unfortunitly I cant ride it as there is a new problem preventing it from running on both cylinders and its the bloody carbs, the right hand side carb is droping fuel out of the float drain so look as tho they will need to come off for a clean

Any commments welcome (obviously or I wouldnt have posted it up) just keep in mind Im cheap and creative this is the reason I didnt just get replacement coils, kiwi ingenuity FTW!!

Good on ya. I wouldn't have dared on such a sensitive engine.. I'll be keen to see it run at full revs.

Ok a bit red faced but it turns out the carbs are ok, part way thru the build I droped a plug from the bench and must of broken it, it has iridum plugs in it but not suited so probly will affect how the engine runs.

Took it for a ride and it goes good, wants to lift the front off the ground as it should even in higher gears.

Sory wont be attending any rides as I havnt finished my license lol only have bhc
