Wouldn't a meter high left hand break suit most surfers on the west coast on NZ?

Well, you're right about that. listening to a Police scanner and they told people along Haumoana and Te Awanga to stay indoors etc, next minute they were all out with their kids on the beach....................major intelligence. Now they've said the Bluff hill is packed with cars and no one can get out as they're are too many there and no one can move - absolute dumb arses!

    NZ Herald says:
Pitt Island in the Chathams has been hit by a 1.5 metre surge of water this morning as the entire east coast of New Zealand has been put on a tsunami alert.

Another surge, measuring one metre, has also reached the Chathams and authorities warn that it is heading towards the mainland.

Official tsunami warnings are in place for the entire east coast after a massive earthquake hit Chile overnight.

A wave measuring 1.5m has hit Raoul Island in the Kermadecs, earlier this morning.

Meanwhile, a wave measuring 20cm has reached Gisbourne this morning but authorities said a second surge could be larger.

Walking over to Rangitoto sounds like fun. I don't expect the water will be back for ages yet

Update: It's 10:52 for the action on the North Shore

Or mods moving a tsunami warning to the Rant or Rave section to keep with proper internet forum protocol.
