Quite often, older people are retired and have no responsibilities in life- and hence no reason to get out of bed at all. some people just need to feel like they are part of the community, or to feel like they are still useful and doing their bit, or to feel like they are still needed. We are all human aren't we? But the experience, wisdom and uselfulness of older people is often disregarded or overlooked, or ignored because of inflated concerns about their inabilities.
You make a very good point here. Our society is so youth orientated - we lose sight of the fact that older people have a much longer world view and therefore can sometimes see the relationships between events that might appear unconnected to a less experienced person. There is a wealth of wisdom there that is disregarded by many. More fool them. It has been said that "the only thing we learn from history is that we don't learn from history". Waste of a resource IMO.
