They'll charge as much as they can get away with. The US$140 odd per barrell price hike was a major contributor to the global downturn and when the price dropped to less than half of that they must have been regretting their greed.

I hope they've learnt from it. Cost me over NZ$30 to fill up yesterday

Apparently we now have to worry about what is happening in the Singapore market. Any ideas why?

Because that's where the majority of the petrol we buy is refined.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

The price of petrol is related to the international refining margin (based on Singapore), which sets the fee the big four (who together own Marsden Pt) must pay to refine their crude. But while petrol prices have been pushed up by high global refining margins (caused by a lack of refining capacity for whatever reason), New Zealand refining fees are capped under a deal between NZ Refining and the big four. This means motorists are immediately paying for higher refining margins, but BP, Caltex, Shell and Mobil are not. New Zealand's market is not competitive at wholesale level. So although there is retail competition, it makes limited difference to prices.

Haha... anyone care to hear about the petrol price in Kuwait?? How about NZ$0.35 a litre. Nope i'm not kidding. Mum can fill her car and the jetski for about $30 or something stupid like that. Amazing what happens when you take tax and transportation out of the picture
    Yeah, nah.

If you take tax out of the equation our petrol price would be almost half of what it is now. That's scary. The problem is our government(s) have grown so used to taxing and spending our money without being accountable for it that even if they were to remove the tax here, they'd just push it up elsewhere to compensate. Because, you know, there will be a swathe of Unions / Labour / etc. supporters bitching if anybody dares to reduce the size of the government.

The last time I remember filling up it was 178 cents for 95, today it was 190 cents for 95... there's lots of tax being made somewhere... wonder what it'll go towards?
    I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!

Way back in 1981 when we came to this country, petrol was $0.71 per litre. Seems ridiculously cheap by today's prices. Until you put it into perspective. Back then my old man, who was a fully qualified sparky, earned a little under $10/hr. Now someone in a similar position would earn three or maybe four times that. But has petrol got three or four times as expensive in the meantime? No it hasn't. So compared to someones income petrol is probably still more affordable now than it has been. That's how I think about it and try and make myself feel better when I go and fill the car up. Have just recently in the last week sold my V8 Land Rover for the very reason that it was getting ridicilously expensive to run. Certainly am glad I've got a little Scorpio to run to work and back. $15 last almost two weeks.

These prices are staggering!!! There doesn't seem to be much protest or media coverage about it nowdays but they are getting pretty dang close to $2 a litre again.

I don't know about anybody else but the cost of living and petrol prices are getting a bit obscene!
And driving a car that get 13mpg at best ( 6km per litre or so) it makes ya cringe a tad!!
