Most R/R should fit if you can't get a genuine one.

I haven't got an R/R but as I'm only 30 mins away from Whitianga and someone else has something within an hour or two away, more than happy to fetch it on Sunday if that helps.

Ok and good luck. Take it you're going to try Econohonda. I looked up their on-line parts list and see that they've got a heap of reg/recs but unfortunately, their part numbers don't mean anything to me.

    Hi Warr
Good to chat last night, we have a sort of a plan, depends on what time we leave here, the bikes locked up on charge at the hire centre. but we hope to be away by 10am, Rob or Frances will give you a ring before we leave. What sort of 'bribe/enticement" :-) would it take to get you and the RR to econohonda at around the same time as us, which of course would have to include lunch. Or if Blackbird is watching perhaps an outing for him.

Took a call from Frances. Problem not a plug and play fix in sight sadly.
Alternator hospital maybe the next stop

That's sad Warren. I'm not all that familiar with VFR 800's but suspect that the alternator stators may have suffered the same complaint as the early Blackbirds from comments I've seen. Higher rated stators for both the 'bird and VFR are available - here's one for the VFR: http://www.regulatorrectifier.com/ca...ad780d268e4781. The price they're quoting, even in USD is cheaper than Ken Cairns can rewind it for and probably the quickest way of getting one unless there's a s/h one around somewhere. IIRC, when my 'bird stator failed, the OEM Honda replacement was daylight robbery at $800 so that's a route to be avoided! Maybe if Vifferman sees this post, he can add his extensive knowledge

Best wishes in getting home guys and sorry about the problem. The one on my 'bird failed in the south island and I made it back up north by buying a second battery and charging overnight!

Sorry - I've been away in Sydney for four days.
I've fitted a couple of non-OEM R/Rs (that is, not "plug'n'play"), and it's not a big deal. In fact, the charging system is more reliable if you eliminate the plugs, as they're a source of failure in themselves. The last R/R failure I had was on a VTR1000, and seemed to be due to corrosion on the R/R plug overheating the connector and burning out the socket, which caused the R/R to fail.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....
