    Charging system issues

Bike is a GSX400X Impulse. Got up nice and early today to do a coro loop, and the bike wouldn't start. It cranked, but sounded a little flat, didn't sound like it was firing at all. Unfortunately no jumper leads at this stage, so started checking the other obvious things like fuses and plugs on the wiring harness, I had had some of these apart recently so thought that perhaps a plug had just come loose somewhere. Went to take the battery out and discovered it had "blown up" - not exploded, but somehow had managed to push the sides out.

Came back to it later with some jumper leads. It started straight away off the car battery, but was pushing out 16.8v at idle and half revs. Pulled out the regulator, it is off a RGV250. I have just checked the regulator against the tests in the RGV workshop manual and it checks out fine. Any ideas of where to go next?

Hey, if it was letting 16.8V get to the battery (which has cooked it, by the way), the R/R is definitely NOT fine. It shouldn't get over 14.5 V or thereabouts.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

The max from the R/R should be 14.5V.

The R/R has cooked the battery and you can see the result.

Time to go looking for a new R/R and battery.

This should be a sticky - god knows the topic comes up oftern enough.
GS & GSX Suzukis have crap charging systems. There is a set of web pages starting here http://www.thegsresources.com/garage/gs_statorfacts.htm that will tell you more than you want to know, and better, how to fix it
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

I agree. Regulator has gone faulty. New battery and new regulator time.
