Laser in a home theatre needs recalibrating?

So when we bought our home theatre 6 years ago the salesman tried to sell us 5 years insurance which would cover having to recalibrate the laser (or do something to it) as it aged. Seems that time has come as it has sporadic problems reading DVDs now. What is the deal with that? Is it worth doing or shoud we just go out and buy a new one as they seem to start at about $400 now. I'd imagine getting someone to to what needs to be done to the old one is going to cost a couple of hundy anyway. Can anyone offer any wisdom on the problem and if it's worth fixing?

    $400?

I priced a Sony DVD player last week, $90 and it had upscaling abilities.

A philips Blu-Ray player came in at $330.

Wait, Is your DVD player one of those nasty things that have an amp built into them and you plug your speakers directly into the DVD player?

you should just be able to plug a dvd player into it, using it just as an amplifier

Fu*k me. That sounds like a great idea. I'll give that a go tomorrow night with our other DVD player.

Tried that and while we could get sound out of the home theatre speakers, we couldn't get sound or picture from the TV despite switching thru the various sources. Will have to ponder on that for a little while.
