    Crush drink drivers cars?

Its in the paper today. the suggestion is that as soon as the breath test is failed, the cops can take the car keys out of the ignition. THAT SOUNDS BLOODY SENSIBLE!!!!! It would have saved that mother of 5's life, and grandmother of 10!.
That little manouveure could save a lot of lives...
As for crushing em, you could sell them on TM for 1$ reserves and give the money to help rehabilitate injured innocent victims, or pay for their hospital care, or sell them for parts.
Or if the drunk is already driving a piece of shit, give them a hard labour sentence where they earn 5 cents an hour breaking concrete or rocks, and give them large sums to work off.
Mr Smith, I find you guilty, and impose a sentence of 1000$ to be earned before your consideration for release from hard labour.
    Whats the general consensus?

Certainly has its merits ,but, in some cases, crushing the car could cause further hardship for family members of the drunk driver. Speaking from experience with an ex who had 3 DIC charges over five years, it didn't matter didddly squat to him that he had no licence. I was the mug that had to drop everything and play chaffeur when he needed to go somewhere. No vehicle would of been impossible with a family. In the end he just bought a cheap car and drove anyway. I think jail is the better option.

One of the options being considered is confiscation and sale of the offender's car. Yes families do suffer and maybe something can be done for them. It could be an idea to contact your local MP and offer your own suggestions, especially if you are personally affected by the proposal.

Racidivist drink drivers will continue to drive regardless until they are physically prevented from doing so.

Well I think crushing cars is moronic
sell them to wreckers for parts is much more sensible. Crushing is such a waste. Also are you going to crush someone else's car they are driving.
I know a guy who has been done 7 times for drunk driving and they still havnt put him inside (and he is surprised himself) he has money so crushing his car would have little effect. His offences are also many times over the limit so the worst of offenders

But locking him up might change his pattern

The car crushing is an idea borne of frustration because the "authorities" don't know what to do!
The main objective is to get the drink drivers to sop their behaviour and to save innocent lives and injuries.
The objective will take a long time to achieve just by trying to change behaviours by asking offenders to think first, before they drive!
One easy way to begin the process would be to invoke the laws we already have.
This is made difficult because there are not enough police and smart arse lawyers and dumb judges fuck up the work the police do and when police are effective and get their work completed the judges let them off and corrections give them a holiday in prison!
No body cares so the drunks just keep on keeping on doing what they do......because they can!
Crushing cars is just a knee jerk reaction by people who don't know what else to say or do................just do your job, is all it really takes, damn it!

Car crushing is a bad idea. If the recidivist offenders know that their car is going to eventually get crushed, then they will drive $100 de-registered piece of shit cars that haven't been road legal for the last 10 years. It's only a $100 loss to them, then they can buy another $100 car and the cycle repeats itself many times.

It would not have, stopped this tragedy(Car Crushing). In fact , it would make some more likely to do runners. Maybe some sort of Barrier system at Drink drive check points may help.
Crushing cars is just political, to get the red neck vote. Especially if they can just buy another.

I heard you'll need 3 strikes to get your car crushed.

3 is enough warnings. Crush those mofos.

It seems to me that to offten Drink drivers / Dangerious drivers, get off on a minimal lose of licence, should not the minimal lose of licence be set at 1 year and 1 day, this would see the offender have to fully resit their licence.
New Zealand seems to have a very big Drink Drive culture, may be the question should be asked why this is so, and what EDUCATION rather than Legislation should be implimented around this, yes we still need the legislation to back up the education for those that refuse to be educated.

    I rekon:
    - automatic confiscation on second offense and sell them, proceeds to ACC.
    - automatic prison on 3rd (3 strikes and your out-a-here!!!)

Your right in that a percentage of scum would avoid, but that is no reason to not do it at all.

There wont be enough to go around.

Govt: "Sorry about the loss of your son. Our government has a new scheme that we pay compensation to the victims of drink drivers. We've crushed those drunk driver's cars to fund the compensation. Here is your $21.48. We've given generously to the others too."

The few I know operated pretty much like that. If you crushed the car, they'd have another bomb next benefit day.
At least we'd have got a wreck off the road though.

"14th conviction for repeat drink driver"

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/3481...t-drink-driver

Richard Steven Rowe, 46, of the Bay of Plenty, is in custody awaiting sentencing in April for his latest drink-driving conviction. He faces up to two years' jail and disqualification from driving for more than a year.
The disqualification is obviously meaningless, and "up to" 2 years in jail?

    He should be there already.
Measure once, cut twice. Practice makes perfect.
