Check out this article on Gizmag. An airbag helmet of a completely different design, it's basically a collar worn while cycling. When gyroscopes detect 'abnormal riding', an aribag inflates to protect the riders head. Early days yet and I'm not convinced it will catch on, but it's a seriously cool concept and just goes to show just how completely outside the box future protection ideas could be.
