Need a station wagon for trips to the snow this year and as i don't know my cars i need you lot to suggest some models!
Needs to be 4WD don't care if its turbo or not don't care if its manual or auto.
Looking to spend around $5000. Already have some models in mind. Have been told to stay away from Subaru because of the insurance premiums.

Everyone i have asked has recommended this! Flat mate had a standard Caldina for years now he has the Turbo Caldina. Definitely on my list of cars to look at.
The 626 and camry both appear to be front wheel drive. Don't really want to piss around with chains but thanks for the choices!
Im starting to think the Caldina and mitsi legnum/libero are going to be my only options.

so yea....caldinas are goodlol.Got a mate with one thats done 270,000 ks,everythings still fine bar the gear shifts a bit sloppy and a few interior rattles.Great wagon.

If you can find a nissan stagea at the right price I'd recommend it.I've had one for a couple of years and 40k and it's been a great wagon.Turbo 2.5 six with the 4wd drive system out of the godzilla.Quite fast too.

Steer clear of the Mitsi... Can't say more than I agree about the Caldina. Mate's got one and loves it.

Given the choice between an older Toyota and Mitsi i would have the Toyota any day,when living up North i worked in a Toyota Franchise for 5 years,in that time i never failed to be amazed at the reliability of the things,ive seen 1.3L Corollas done 300,00 +kms and still going strong and no rust problems,not saying Mitis are bad just dont think you can go wrong with a Toyota.(despite there recent problem).

I am already a fan of Toyotas. I have driven a 1.3L corolla (that my parents purchased brand new in 1989) for the last few years. Its up to about 220,000k's and been in 3 "write off" accidents. Still going fine!
And i already hate mitsi because my mum and GF both own galants that i hate!

If you avoid the turboed models and stick with the 2.5 normally aspirated jobs they're ok...there was no difference at all between the quote for my Forester vs a Caldina...bit more than your 5k budget though - so if they're older and non-imobilsered, might be different.
