    Competetive fighting - Auckland/Waikato Area

I've seen plenty of vague references (yes, plenty from skidmark, too) from people on here about their time kickboxing/boxing etc, so I figure surely someone here might be able to help me out with some advice? I have no experience in any "fighting sports" apart from a few years in a few types of Karate which only had the occasional light sparring, but I'd like to get into some sort of sport with plenty of training of course, but a decent amount of ring time even though I'm not Tua/liddell, but I'm not really sure what to look at (MMA, kickboxing, boxing etc). Can someone offer any advice of what to look into? Cheers

In the Waikato - See Terry Hill.

In Auckland - plenty to see the lee gar gyms are good for kickboxing - else boxing gyms generally do the trick - Northside boxing is a awesome gym.

Cant say that I have ever seen their guys fight - is it more general classes or a fighters gym?

edit: not that I get to the fights very often now - only 5 or so a year - so they may well be - I just aint seen em. (no offense intended)

best for what - they are both sports. Watch some vids and think "whay would I enjoy more" - one is not > the other.

Mostly general classes. Fighters train 6 nights a week. I would say we have 6 top fighters that i know of.

I can think of two videos of fights.

    ^^
First fight. He has awesome technique when training can't watch the video right now but from memory it was pretty good for a first fight!

One of our fighters is based in Auckland but still fights for our club. He is in tihs video somewhere hopefully the link works (capped internet can't check). Name is Edmund (sp).

Next fight is April 24th in Hamilton. Hopefully i will have my first fight by the end of the year but i actually have to start training properly and not be so lazy!

Yea I didn't mean to sound like one of these "boxer vs kickboxer vs roid raging kangaroo trained in BJJ" people, just thinking out loud. On one hand, the it looks really technical (in a good way), going to ground in MMA, and looks a lot more close in agressive, where as kickboxing is more large movements, both look good.

One thing I just thought - When I was doing karate I was pretty flexible in the legs and good with kicks, but now I'm a little older I'm a lot shorter than most dudes that I'd probably be fighting (5'7") so maybe MMA would suit me better?

I'm liking the look of what sil3ntwar posted. Looks like you get a lot of time to work on the basics, and if you want it enough you have the opportunity to get into sparring and more advanced stuff a little later on. Would that be how you would describe it? I might get in touch later, but I'm just wondering what the prices are for beginner classes?
