    SUCKER PUNCH

interesting. I saw it at the big screen last week. I had read a few reviews, and one in particular called it misogynist, hateful, pretentious and dire. Pretty much the same reaction as yours.

    I dont share that view.

I was prepared to be underwhelmed, and also prepared for the thing to suck horribly. But in my opinion, it hit all its marks with aplomb, a bit of sly humour, and a not bad story. Plus the fight scenes were beautiful, beautifully shot, and I really liked the mashup of all the different styles of movie and movie fight scene: from dragon slaying, to knights and armour, old Japan, WW1, WW2, Vietnam, and into the future. (Whats not to love about powered exo-skeleton fighting armour?) I thought given its target parameters and intended audience, it succeeded brilliantly. Sure, the hot chicks in short skirts thing never gets old, and you've seen a lot of it before (another swords and sorcery fight at an ancient Japanese temple, well, OK) but not often together.

I thought the soundtrack was pretty good, though I dont think they should have used covers of "Search and Destroy" by the Stooges and "Where is My Mind" by the Pixies when the originals were and are so much better. Of course "Where is My Mind" was used to such great effect at the end of FIGHT CLUB so maybe they didnt want to remind everyone of that particular work of genius. (or they couldn't afford it, or whatever). I thought the Bjork tracks were fantastic. Particularly the first one.

I really liked this film: sure, the story is a little weak, its obviously aimed at 14-16 year old boys (and dirty old men, like me) but I think it exceeded those restrictions. I also thought the last ten minutes were genuinely gripping, worth the price of admission alone.

I may even watch his remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD now: you can pick it up for a tenner usually. I have avoided it because Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD is one of my favourite films ever, such a sly commentary on western consumer culture (with zombies).

So there you go, a contrary view.

Cheese. Absolute Spaceship-Sci-Fi cheese. But it's a tasty cheese, a very tasty cheese.

5.5/10 for General Films rating, but rates 8.0/10 for Entertainment Films Rating.

On A Personal Note: This wasn't a Random Pick Review. I needed an evening entertainment to go with my dinner.
The first time I saw this I hated it, absolutely hated it. Jingoistic, materialistic, militaristic America boosting tripe. I liked the boobies and that was it. I have watched it a couple of times since, and I've realised that Voerhoven (sp?) was taking the piss out of america. Its a comedy! On that level, its fantastic. Plus, you know, Doogie Howser laying hands on the bug "Its Afraid". And the boobs.

Its more SCREAM than 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY*

    *not that I like 2001

Its also not got much in common with Heinlein's original book. IIRC Heinlein served in WW2, and this book was a thinly veiled justification for the American war in Vietnam. How did that work out?

    Just sat through sucker punch.

It would have been better if it was shortened by half an hour, Sure the eye candy was awesome, But...meh, it grew tiresome.

The end was telegraphed from the start, as soon as the goose in the temple had finished talking I knew what the fifth item was.

I should have saved my coin and just downloaded some 5 minute eye candy from stocking-movies.com

    Four Lions.
A black comedy as only the Brits can do.

    According to the blurb...
In a British city, four men have a secret plan. Omar is disillusioned about the treatment of Muslims around the world and is determined to become a soldier. This is the most exciting idea Waj has ever heard. Better still it's a no brainer because Omar does his thinking for him. Opposed to Omar and everyone else on earth is the white Islamic convert Barry. He'd realize he joined the cell to channel his nihilism - If he had half the self knowledge of a duck. Faisal is the odd man out. He can make a bomb - but he can't blow himself up just now coz his sick dad has "started eating newspaper". Instead he's training crows to fly bombs through windows. This is what Omar has to deal with. They must strike a decisive blow on their own turf but can any of them strike a match without punching himself in the face? 7.5/10.

Unfortunately this bored us to tears and seriously considered switching it off half way through.
A couple of great scenes along the way... firing the missile during training and also the police marksmen...
The "outcome" (ending) was different from what I expected.
    Still, I give it 3/10.

    Depends.........
I really found Click and Happy Guilmore funny but it really depends what your girl likes.

Maybe she'd find The Human Centipede funny?
