The affects are fantastic, but I've seen those movies in other guises over the years (including the half cartooned version of LOTR, which was by far a better movie imho) and didn't really rate them as anyfink special. Fine to watch once, but no need to go back for more .

I know what you mean about Cruise as Reacher. It spoiled it for me when I heard about it way back.

Jason Stratham or even Mr Reese from Person of Interest would have been better options.

However, given money bags Cruise also produced it, the part was probably bought by him as part of the deal.

absolutely. and if you have Cruise attached it gets very easy to raise the money to make it, get a decent director, finesse the script etc.

He will have had control over all those things. Having said that I am going to treat it as just another action movie when I see it, and see how it goes.

Yeah, I'll go and see Reacher just 'cos it's a Reacher movie.

    The Baytown Outlaws.

Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria. Bit of mindless redneck action. 7.5/10

No, I just couldn't think of other appropriate type actors. They are both big guys who I think would fit the bill better. Yes, Jason Statham could probably fit the bill too.

Agreed, though the bar for sci-fi hasn't been set very high of late.

Clive owen or Gerard Butler, not quite as tall as Reacher is meant to be but they'd be better than that dwarf they've got now, although I reckon Vincent D'Onofrio would probably be my pick

Yep, could do. D'Onofrio does a very good "quietly menacing" attitude although he was funny as hell in Men in Black.

Cruise bought the film rights to the Reacher books so he has total control. My concern, apart from his size, is that there are some seventeen books and counting. Even if they make each movie cover two books as was done with the Sharpe novels, Cruise will be in a zimmer frame before the last movie is filmed.

I know people who will not go to the movie simply because it stars Cruise. I'll go just to see if he can make it believable.

(Mum is a Reacher fan and she just gave me the run down on the guy) Steven Segal or perhaps Vince Vaughn heh... then again, Liam Neeson probably woulda been my pick, potentially Adam Baldwin although I haven't seen if he can pull off a non dumb person.

Really enjoyed reading all the Reacher books.
No problem with Tom Cruise as an actor. Clearly lacking in the physical attributes for the role of Reacher (perhaps more akin to the Hobbit?). Someone like Ray Stevenson would seem to make more sense.
Still planning on seeing the movie though to see how well they tell the story.

    .
the film is an adaptation of the novel ONE SHOT I believe.

They could always do the Bourne thing and get Renner in after Cruise is too old to be believable

Reacher is 6 ft 5 and 115 kg and not quite 40: Liam Neeson is too old, unfortunately (he was a boxer too). Ray Stevenson too old again. Statham more believable but too small. D'Onofrio a bit old.

my picks from this guys list:

    http://www.imdb.com/list/DAzR7-F-h1U/

are Joe Manigenello (he was/is in TRUE BLOOD) and the dude from PRISON BREAK Dominic Purcell. But if Cruise owns the movie rights then its up to him. Hooray for Hollywood!
