Newbie from Auckland - Try not to hold it against me (rotorrian)

Hi All

My name is Rian and i'm about to make the big move up to a real bike.

My GF bought a lil cute red V-moto Milan last year to commute to uni on. The first few months in did like 50km total in that time. Then we decided one day to take it for a ride to Mission Bay for coffee.

Well since then we in the last few months we have done almost 900km going for 100+km ride on a lil 50cc scooter (Quite an achievement considering its can only overtake pedestrians, skateboarders, licra-wearing riders and road slugs) We're hooked on riding but sadly only limited to urban assaults.

I suggested a few months ago about moving up to real bike. Well the good news is my GF was thinking the exact same thing so gonna probably buy a 2010 Hyosung GT250R

What are you more experienced riders thoughts on the new Injected 2010 models and other good newbie bikes ????

On a side note as well.

Heya Rian

That is awesome that you are looking to upgrade to a 'real bike'. The new Hyosung bikes are very nice. My mate just brought the same model that you are looking at, I took it for a blat and it was good smooth ride. Im not sure about all the specs and technical stuff but the bike handles well.

You will loose a fat wad of cash buying a new one of those and selling it a few years later. Second-hand ones are just as nice, only a few less hp, use marginally more fuel, and at least you have some hope of them holding their value.

Make sure you ride the Comet as well as the R, although the Comets can feel a little jittery in the front when two-up compared to the R.

edit: um, I assume you are on your full license? If not, it's an $800 fine being caught with pillion.

But it will be worth the wait.

Wow that a pretty heffty fine compared to what the youngin's get for driving with there mates, but I guess the risks are greater....?

Thanks also for the advice on the 2nd hand Hyos I will check out whats on Trademe.

You sure it's not one of the "Outside your license conditions" fines that's $100 and 30 demerits? Not that i ride with a pilion, but thought it would come under that "blanket" fine.

Hi Rian,

Welcome to KB, do not feed the trolls etc etc

I started out on a GPX (the new Ninja is basically a redressed GPX) which I loved dearly. However, if I were doing my license over again I'd probably go for a 2nd hand naked bike like a VTR or Hornet which won't lose as much value as a brand new bike

Where did $800 come from??

Straight from the NZTA website:

What if I break the conditions of my learner or restricted licence?
If you break the graduated conditions of your learner or restricted licence (excluding the requirement to display L plates) you will get 35 demerit points and a $100 infringement fine, or a fine of up to $1000 if you are summoned to appear in court.

If you do not display your L plates or you break any general conditions that apply to your licence (eg do not wear lenses when required) you will get 25 demerit points and a $400 infringement fine, or a fine of up to $1000 if you are summoned to appear in court.

Your licence will be suspended for three months if you incur 100 or more demerit points within two years. In addition to further court appearances, your vehicle can be impounded for 28 days if you are caught driving with a suspended licence).
