Just remember it is supposed to be a bit looser on the DR than most road bikes.
Quote from the DR book...
The slack of the chain should be 30 - 45mm as measured at about mid-point between the two sprockets.
Rear axle nut 100 N-m.
I read it to be done on side stand too.
Thing that annoys me is there is the chain guide and chain rollers that get in the way when you try moving the chain up and down to measure the slack.

Well..as per usual the boys stood around and nattered non-stop....
I did my chain!
With help and guidance, thanks you lovely lot - I do appreciate it
There were saucy cakes to consume
then a few of us went for some grub, drinks and more nattering.A very pleasant way to spend the evening
There is some thing strangely satisfying in both being able to do maintenance on your own vehicles, and as an engineer watching others fixing their own bikes.
Or am I just a sick puppy?
Just another leather clad Tinkerbell.

It was interesting to talk about electric motorbikes tonight.
Here's a link to the free book (very well written - by a physicist) where I read the information about hydrogen versus electric vehicles. This book is the reason I think that hydrogen is currently an over-hyped and still experimental technology, whereas battery electric vehicles are already basically practical and viable:

Skip to page 140 for the juicy bits about hydrogen versus electric.
It seems there is hope that we can still ride around on rocketships using 'sustainable' technologyand not be limited to 15mph:

I thank the man with the torque wrench, it was good to get a better feel of what it takes to push 100nm. I tweaked the DRs axle nut with my own spanner after to feel the effort with that, my spanner is definitely shorter than the one Helen was using at the workshop but I will not push it anywhere near as far by foot in the future.
I wasn't in on the conversation about electric motorbikes but that online book is making for quite interesting reading thanks robertvi for the link.

Nah, I just damn forgot - sorry. You can tell when I start swaying side to side, it's not channelling Elvis, it's the back starting to give up the ghost and laying down the law for a sit-down.
I'll have a look at all the You-Tube vids; the one I'm sort of considering as a reference for my rear-wheel motor was
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_41btVawMc
It's actually the drive wheel for a solar racer from a Japanese University, http://www.ashiya-u.ac.jp/solarcar/index.html - I think they did an Ozzie Solar challenge with that design 2007-8 or something like that. There are other vids under that account, showing the little testbed motor - seems to get up to well over 3000rpm; for my wheel & direct drive IIRC 100kMh = ~ 1100rpm so plently of leeway.
Of course, if you want to do it easy then try
http://www.enertrac.net/product.php#productanchordesc
for the 10kW cont/ 30kW peak wheel motor; you'd just need to fab a torque arm and a disk mount and then there's not even a chain to maintain - it's brushless (AC) as well!
Lots of options for playing around...
He who shall go stately at the back and not stress out.
So Gareth what was it you said about MaxF's "Funky ass curves"? - God, now I'm worried...
hopefully Ill be free for the next evening.
