Oh well - Murphy strikes... too much talking about wiring and now (since this morning) the RS is having "ignition no longer required" moments whenever I turn about 20deg left... will be working it over on Sat, it's not really safe for turns as is and will need the fairing off to get in up-under.

Have a good ride; will probly get my kms on Sunday, or still be swearing! (And don't suggest going around the Greta-Scargill loop the other direction, either!)
He who shall go stately at the back and not stress out.
So Gareth what was it you said about MaxF's "Funky ass curves"? - God, now I'm worried...

Yeah, funny that! You would think that would be part of the test, mind you, I'm not sure if you would be able to pull a wheelie on mine! (and I ain't trying it either!)

Hi Maxf - I used to have an R1100GS a few years ago and had the same problem. BMW have/had a habit of tying the 1st cable tie on the wire coming from underneath the ignition key too tight and the constant movement eventually cracks the wiring sheath and then breaks the wire. I would be checking that location 1st.

Niggle - thanks for the thought, I'm fairly sure it's not like that since I pulled all the wiring and cables and carefully re-routed when I got it, have had strangeness from replaced (and binding, bent) cables before - you know how heavy the BMW clutch cables can be.

If I'm in luck, the cheapie stud extractor set I got today will be able to deal to the anti-tamper bolts and I won't have to strip down the whole front to re-solder with the switch in place (eg upside down and a real PITA)... looks like (so far) there was no stress relief on the inside of/at the entry to the switch and it's just wiggled free.

On the brighter side, it's probably due for some TLC on the contacts and at least it didn't short out. If it goes really well I might get to check over the handlebar mounts and put some stiffening washers on them too...more fun!

    Cheers

Me neither! Last time I tried that (20+ years ago now (EEK!)) up went the front but the front wheel remained on the ground! Luckily I managed to gently put it down on the lawn so no damage to the forks, just my childishly enthusiastic ego. Had a good laugh about it.
Once the wheel was back on and properly secured, my neighbour tried it and ended up on his back with the bike on top of him
