    Pressure on judge to quit

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/ar...ectid=10637508

This one has been brewing for a while. We have a supreme court judge who owes a tonne of money to a lawyer, and then failed to disclose this conflict of interest when hearing his cases.

The problem is that the lawyer could exert pressure on the judge to influence the outcome of a case. And in this case, it is a supreme court judge - so the impact could be substantial as precedents will be set.

And to make it even dirtier, the supreme court judge had a vested interested in a horse racing venture with the commissioner that had to rule on his conduct.

Now I'm not saying this particular judge has done anything wrong in his cases, but the whole principle stinks. A supreme court judge can't be sitting in on cases where someone could influence his decision, and then he himself be judged by a business partner. It smells like an old boys club.

And the thing has only really come to light because a former judge with 43 years of experience has lodged a complaint. And he can only do this because he is no longer a judge - otherwise the person he is complaining to, the business partner of the supreme court judge, can simply order him to shut up.

The judges are highly paid. Part of there pay package is that they have to remain squeaky clean. We can't have judges being involved in practices which brings their decisions into doubt.

My vote, he has to leave. Your vote?

If road-workers can get drug tested and kicked off a work site for failing a random drug test on minimum wage, then fook yes, he should be outed.
In fact, the both of them really should, they know better, and as you said they are paid to keep themselves out of situations like this.....

Shame if he's a good judge. But more importantly (snigger), what's the lawyer got over the Judge that could ruin his career... if it's strippers and lady boys... let him have at it and let him do his job.
    I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!

As I understand it, he's got $250k over him.

But there is know way to tell if he is a good judge - because we don't know what goes on behind closed doors.

    I can tell you.

If he's a judge in N.Z, then no.

The question I have is this:

If he failed to disclose a potential conflict of interest, and, if the herald is to be believed, denied the existence of obligation, then do you trust his judgement?

    Me either.

I can't imagine what the fuck he was thinking getting himself into that situation. Just how many guns can he possibly point at his own head? Surely he knew that would turn bad.

I think he should go. It's too late to fix that.

As I said above, if he didn't think it could turn out bad for him, what does that say about his judgment?

I agree with you. Perhaps he thinks he can fiddle some underage girls and that will be sweet too? Sharpen up...
