Hot and sticky in Bangkok

Sticky hot, stinky hot or just bloody hot and humid. The redshirts are also causing a stink. About 50 died yesterday from clashes between them and the army/police. A few blocked roads yesterday made it a pain getting around. Went over one bridge that was half blocked by red shirts and was littered by destroyed army vehicles.



When I was here last year it was the yellow shirts. Almost wasn't able to come because they had taken over the airport. But they got their way just in time for my flight.

There was an explosive device detonated at Khao San Rd, a popular tourist road, as well as gun battles between red shirts and police. Was gonna go there but we ended going somewhere else instead. Bugger, could have seen some action.

Songkran has been cancelled in central Bangkok because of all the shit going down , so we might head up to Kanchanaburi tonight for a day or two.

There really nothing to worry about unless you tend to hang out at popular tourist areas, and I usually avoid those like the plague as they're full of loud obnoxious people. And there's far better places to go and see in Thailand than the usual tourist traps.

Not planing on going out much today. Brought some stones from a garden center yesterday, so will spend this morning laying them down in the garden. Anyway, looks like the red shirts will be getting what they wanted. The Thai army chief says parliament should be dissolved, and election officials have recommended that the prime ministers party should be disbanded. So I guess the yellow shirts will start protesting.

For 3 days the whole country turns into one big water fight for the Thai New Year. It’s just the right festival for this time of the year in Thailand, the hottest time of the year. Along every road in every town, people with buckets, hoses and water guns doing battle with people on the back of pickups with barrels of water as they pass by.

Don’t have any of my own photos as a camera is the last thing you want to carry when you’re getting gallons of water thrown at you. Today Gif and I rode on the back of scooter taxis armed with water guns around the streets near our house. Much better than the tourist areas as some of them get overly aggressive and miss the point. Much more fun celebrating it with the locals, so we’ve spent the last couple of days soaking wet.

Some of the locals like to use ice water. Nothing is more of a shock to the system than having ice water poured over you in this hot weather. It doesn’t help that there’s an ice factory down the road from our place.

If you get the chance to come to Thailand, April 13, 14 & 15 is Songkran.

Also swimming in the water falls at Kanchanaburi was awesome
