Ryan's final round of the summer series.

It was an early start to Sunday, driving up to Taupo from Hastings but the drive didn’t seem to take long and we were there by about 7.30. It was a few hours before qualifying in which I was hoping to do well in to get on the front row.
We started the bike up and it ran fine so when I heard the second call for qualifying I put my helmet on and lined up on the dummy grid, bike still running fine. We got the all clear to head out on the track so, clicking it into gear and letting the clutch out I hear a grinding noise but it went away so I carried on. Just coming onto the track, as I accelerate I hear it again so I pulled off the track and turned it off. I checked everything that could have come loose but it was just wishful thinking because I knew it was an engine noise, like bearings. Sure enough when I got back to the pits and dad pulled it apart, just as he pulled the pin out the side of the piston I hear bits fall into the engine as the small end bearing fell apart. I knew it wasn’t going to be possible to get the parts in time to do the races which would have meant I wouldn’t be getting first place for the series so I was pretty gutted. Next thing I know dad and I are off to find Skip (Sue) to see if on the off chance I could borrow her bike as she wasn’t racing it. She said I could if it ran fine at lunch time because it has a new engine in it that had hardly been run in. I’m always really nervous of riding other peoples bikes so was even more worried with this one having a fresh engine. It ran fine at lunch time so I was back in business starting the races from the back due to not having a qualifying time which is not what I wanted, though few races are won by whoever gets the best start. It took a while to get used to the bike as it had way better brakes and the gears were up the other way to my bike so I was a bit off pace but I still tried to get as good a place as I could. I didn’t get a really good start in the first race but got passed a couple of people coming up to the first corner and then got passed another bike on the sweeper over the back. I was slowly gaining on a couple of prolights then as I was passing Tyler on the pit straight I knew he had problems which is unlucky after having problems last round too. I was trying to catch up to the prolights but they were way too far ahead, I still came 5th which I was happy with considering the circumstances. Race two was a good race, I got off the line quickly making a few places up straight away and coming out of turn one behind a kr150 but he left me behind after the first lap. I caught a glimps of Skip giving me the thumbs up as I went past on the next lap. Near the end of the race I caught up to a prolight and had a bit of a battle finishing 4th place. So after an up and down day I got first place for the series with the Tony Burrell memorial trophy which was my goal for the series.

Russell and I arrived at Taupo to help out with the running of the final round of the PMCC Summer Series to which we were both looking forward to doing as our Moto is if you cant be out there amongst the rest of them on the track competiting then the next best thing is being there to help out with the running of the event. As you know by now I had the motor repaired by Billy and was dying to get the bike out on the track to see how it would go since putting the motor back into the frame which we did the weekend before. Thanks to Nigel for allowing Russell to take the bike out during the lunch break to see how it would go and to try and run the motor in before the start of the Winter Series was very much appreciated. I was standing behind the pit wall giving Russell the thumbs up sign as he went pass to see whether or not he was going to give me 1 back or the thumbs down so I could know whether the bike was going ok and I was pleased to receive the thumbs up as he went by.
After everything went well with the lunchtime testing we then gave the ok for Ryan to take the bike out for his 2 Races which I must say was more than impressive to watch. Ryan did an amazing job with the bike and I would like to thank you for running the bike in for me even more. It was truely great to see you ride it 100% better than me and hopefully 1 day in the future that I can ride it as fast as you did.

Thats what its all about Ryan helping those riders who need the help and who appreciate it like you did. You may have had a huge smile on your face winning the Streetstock class but mine was even bigger when I saw how well your rode the RG out there. That I will never forget.

I can tell you, his smile was much bigger at the end of the day, than it was when i went over on the Quad to see him on the Infield on his broken bike....
It was one of those moments where I just felt so sorry for him, and there was nothing we could do......
As it turns out, you could Skip, so well done for that.

Great to see you kept your cool... or, more to the point, your emotions on the inside while waiting for practice to finish.....
It is times like that that demonstrate the difference between a good rider and a great racer.....

You can say honestly you earnt that trophy.

Congratulations Ryan on your Championship win. When i saw you and your bike sitting on the infield at practise, and then finding out what had happened, and speaking with your dad regarding how close you were to your series win. Skip and i had a discussion about lending you the bike and both agreed, knowing the disappointment you were facing, that as long as it ran well at lunch break you could do the races.
Both Skip and i both watched your races, saw you get a poor start in race one, but to see you work your way through the field we were so wraped in that, then in race two get an even better start, as we were standing right behind you, we both said this will be good to see, and jumped up on the wall and watched the whole race.
Congratulations once again, to yourself and Tyler for a great effort in the "Street stocks"
