I was wondering where you were.
Mallard's idea of a waterfront stadium that could double as a cruise ship terminal was equally shit. The concept showed a laughable grasp of the security requirements that international ships (and passengers) demand, and would have meant (again) that the one chance that Auckland had not to cock-up Queen's Wharf would have been fucked up.
I think that the decision to throw away the "development" in the short term is a fantastic one - I'm not giving National credit for that particularly because i simply don't know who made that decision.
The "Party Central" idea had merit - albeit a much too short-term view of what to do with a fantastic asset in the middle of the City. Also, there was a much too short lead time to do anything meaningful.
I'd much prefer they shut-off part of, say, Queen St every night for a nightly "party-central". (It wont happen for the same reason the V8 race never happened - all the NIMBYs will waaaaa (tm) about it.) Or set-up a temporary "Party-Central" in Victoria Park for the duration.
