    those scenes looked horrific.
One thing I do like about this country, as sad and as tragic as that accident was, it's the 'worst for a decade', and that was 8 people. Other countries deal with this every other day. Still kinda feel that NZ is small enough to care..
Still a horrific nightmare that shouldn't have happened.

It's incidents like this that raise my respect for emergency workers (ambos, cops, fire service).
    Good on ya guys.

    Cool

    very tragic accident.

It must be very hard on all emergnancy workers who had to go to the scene...

as the van was sliced in half....Its amazing that one survived after seeing it on tv news.

The truck driver now has to live with that for the rest of his life.... I hope he is offered very good counscelling.

I'm with the posts above - poor truckie and emergency workers. I read that one of the women in the first on scene ambo crew had never been to a serious MVA before. My thoughts go out to all involved, and their families/friends.

    Shiny road major contributing factor?

The news item video clearly showed that the road surface exhibited severe surface flushing.
The LTNZ and Transit bring in a special survey truck from Aussie, periodically, to measure the traction offered by the road surface. We can tell the dick heads it's slippery for free. They don't do much to fix these hazards.
If this was Europe or USA the authorities would be sued into bankruptcyfor letting the roads get like this.

Too bloody true, I had a shincter tightening moment hitting some of this 'summer ice' while overtaking. I hit a patch of tar, the wheel spun and stepped out while alongside the overtakee. But then it was my fault for not driving to the conditions or being able to tell tar from smooth wet road in the rain at 50 metres.
BTW. although 8 died in that accident, China has 360 road deaths every day!

Golden rule: treat the centre-line like an elctrified razor-wired concrete barrier.

Bugger all crashes are NOT linked to somebody crossing the centre of the road - speed/sleep/drunk/inattention it doesn't matter the reason.

I've wondered about this accident since I heard of it.

We're very quick to blame the road for the problem.

The driver was 66. It's a possibility that he could have had a heart attack. It's happened before.

It seems to me a bit unlikely that someone who drove that road that many times in all sorts of conditions would have made an error like that. 66 is an age where most people have decent driving experience and haven't started to lose their marbles.

Anyway just my $0.02. Still a nasty thing to happen. RIP.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

I don't believe it! A real cop has let slip the real reason people die on our roads.
    Thank you Scumdog.

It's possible, but very strange that an uncontrolled vehicle turns to the inside of a curve.
