Back in the day (mid to late 70s) Butchart's Bakery down the end of Tawa St used to make mean pies. Probably feature that rubbish yellow pastry now, I wager.

Butchart's was still run by the same oldboy in the exact same location until just a few years ago, its now moved into the next door building and I believe still in the same family.

Food is all pretty good, with a special nod to the Chicken salad sandwiches, Pies are top quality with 2 gourmet pies available each day and they routinely enter them in pie competitions. And of course they still sell the Raspberry Special.

Butcharts is now run by the old boys son. Still make real pies with real pastry. Up until a couple of years ago, we lived just along the road a bit. My kids used to go up there on a sunday just before closing time and come back with a selection of leftovers that the shop gave away. Usually a pie and a cake each. Varied from week to week. They loved it.

As much as it pains me tom say it better than any pies I have ever eaten in NZ.

    Nom Nom.

I think I might have to check them out, ( and the other Wangapies) next time I visit me Mum and Dad. I was always afraid to go back to Butchart's after all those years, just in case my childhood memories were shattered by a decline in quality.
