    Help!? Car radio channels

Recently bought a Subaru Legacy wagon and it came with the custom stero set up.

Went to play the radio and i can only go up to 89 which is fucking pointless and it doesnt even pick up any radio channels.

How do I go about fixing this to get heaps of channels and the full range to 109 or what ever it goes up to.

Im talking about a FM radio here

you need a band expander, which shifts nz radio frequencys down to ones you stereo can manage, it plugs in between the aerial and the stereo. alternatively, if you can tune down low enough I heard you can pick up the police channels

You'll need an FM band expander. If you're handy with a soldiering iron you'll have the job done in about 15mins. With the Legacy wagon you can wire it into the wiring going into the bottom of the electric aerial itself in the boot. You should be able to get on from car audio company or electronics parts suppliers for between $10-$20.

External box that shifts the signal by 10/12/14MHz depending on which one you get. Just plug it in between the aerial and stereo aerial socket, and connect the (usually one) wire to the power wire to the stereo.

Here is a typical band expander. It has the same male lead as your aerial does into the back of your stereo, so you plug your aerial lead into the expander and then the expander into the stereo, and the power lead to a 12v power source, easy as. However, even easier on most Subaru wagons as you can access the electric aerial motor from inside the boot. Simply place the expander in line there and attach power lead to the power source going to the electric aerial motor. A car audio outfit will do it for you for between $20-$40. (I sold cars for a living for 10+yrs, had plenty of these fitted).

Thing is, it could already be a decent unit.

What he said. Then you wont have to remember wether the band expander u got shifts it 10 or 20. You wont have to remember that 90.9 is actually 70.9, so life will be so much easier. (Just make sure you google how to take apart the centre console first, theres one tricky screw you wont find unless you know its there!)

BTW. Congrats on the sub. They are fun, but boy are they expensive. How does $250 a month in maintenamce sound for the first year of ownership for my RS twin turbo?
    Yeah, nah.

Get a nice Alpine MP3/IPod headunit. Doesn't need to be a new one. Chuck the slant one in the bin.
