XR600RG problem

Hi All
I'm helping a mate fix a problem with his XR600RG twin carb.
It starts OK (but compression is definitely down).
It runs ok with a decent amount of throttle but at idle it runs for about a minute then dies .
At slow speed/low throttle settings its the same. Its almost like it runs out of fuel.

I've stripped and cleaned carbs everything is clean and in apparently good nick.
Floats correct, jets all clean and clear
Fuel cap vent good and clear. Air filter clean and properly oiled
We have changed the stator and no change.

It has been suggested by a supposed honda mechanic that raising the needles a notch will fix the problem which I'll try next. But needle effects 1/4-3/4 throttle so to me seems strange advice?

Anyone know if this a common problem with a known fix

Thanks, Yes have checked choke is working as it should.

This really is a frustrating problem.
Im a resonably competant bike mechanic and have checked all the common/obvious things but still no joy.

Pull the enrichener on a bit, does it keep idling?

Bike will still start to die after a few seconds with the choke on but you can catch it with the throttle and keep it going.
With choke off it starts to die after a few seconds but you cant keep it going with throttle.
It just goes buuuhh and dies like the kill switch has been hit.

It seems like fuel starvation but the slow speed jets all seem clear.

After it dies have you taken the bowl of and checked for fuel,as you say it sounds like its starving but am wondering if its the opposite.

Them and the RF model had an issue with valve clearances , make sure they are very acurate and aslo check the decompression valve is seating and hasnt broken the small spring to seat it. It was very common when they were left sitting for a while during thier life.

The other fix is a good carb instead of the stoopid setup as standard.

This old girl has the good setup,still a bitch to kick over but.Pic is of when i bought it,been taken to bits and almost back together.Its only been a couple of years........lol.
