Advice on buying '96 Toyota Carib

    Hullo,

    Alright, alright, I know it's a cage...
I'm off to look at a '96 Toyota Carib Touring Z tomorrow. 4wd 7af-e Auto.
Does anyone on here know of any typical problems I should be on the lookout for?

    Cheers...

Its a Toyota, bloody reliable. Watch for clunky shift from auto and rust under the tailgate lip. If it doesn't drive smoothly walk away. 4wd chews tires if wheel allignment is off. Anymore details?

Do you need 4wd? IMHO, a 2wd corolla is a better idea

Rust under the tailgate lip. Ah-ha. That's the sort of info I'm after. Cheers.

Sweet as, what price and mileage is it?

Watch out for a badly serviced auto box too. If it clunks or sticks walk away!

165000km, should be able to get it for a little above 4k. Has had regular servicing and receipts to prove it.

Steering should veer gently left when you take your hands off the wheel and it should change gear smoothly. Check the receipts that anti freeze has been used in the radiator. The 4wd system can stress the steering parts if its been driven lots with bad wheel alignment. Can be a bit dear to fix.

I've had a 4wd Carib wagon and it was a good car. Ran it up to near 300 thou, then sold it. I was the culprit who drove it lots with bad wheel alignment and had to replace the front shocks, steering bushes and tie rod ends because of it.
