First sprocket & chain at 53,500km

    Hi All

Just wanted to share that I have just had the sprockets & chain done on the Blackbird at 53,500 km not bad!

When I brought the bike new in 05 one of the first things I did was get a scott oiler fitted and it has paid off. The bike has been from the Cape to Bluff and alot of places in between and never missed a beat.

I've attached a piture of the front sprocket and it doesn't look that bad.

I've replaced the chain with a ZZZ Series QX-Ring EK Chain so it'll be interesting to see how long the replacements last.

    cheers

scott oilers do seem to rate... but the bigest saver is 'not' adjusting it every bloody week. IMO a chain finds its own tension which is looser than the average jo thinks, tighten it and it streachs to were it best suits, repeat.
Bloody good KM's from such HP.

I'm not sure whether this is good or not. Mrs H's Bandit is pushing 80,000km on its original chain and sprockets. It has been Scottoilered since new.

I suspect it may be some type of record. Tell her she needs to do more wheelies if she want's to stress that chain.

Could have got away with not changing the sprockets but decided to, the chain had only just got to the red marker. In that whole time I only adjusted the chain once a couple of months ago.

My Hornet has has a scott oiler fitted and are knocking on 200 thousand K's all good ... BUT
just wanted to draw your attention to the state of the sprocket & output shaft spline.
The 'modern' approach is for the sprocket to go on dry.
With the scott oiler fitted there is no reason to go looking in that area for many k's.
The result of this is significant wear on this spline. Mine now has 2mm of play in the spline and I suspect BigB your spline is well on the way from the profile shown.
My suggestion is instead of the sprocket going on dry that something like 'copper coat' be used.
On my Hornet I was getting a significant grinding noise when on over-run (slowing down on engine breaking). I have employed a temporary fix but a more permanent repair will be fitting a replacement counter-shaft ... not a 5 min repair.

PS For the replacement parts I got a real awesome deal on eBay ... The complete gearbox internals off a 07 @ 5000miles for $NZ220 including front sprocket.

    Wondering that myself.
If it wasn't for a concise set of rules, we might have to resort to common sense!

I'm guessing the red marker for the rear axle limit to how far back when tightening the chain.
