Now see here Ed...I bugger off for a few days and you go and do yourself in? That's simply not on.

I suggest a bit of DIY, quick gulp of anasthetic of your choice, swipe wiv a razor blade, squirt of gib filler and RobertsYourMothersBrother.

    See? Eezy Peezy.

NO giggling. Dont disturb your room-mate.

Hey don't tell all my secrets! You'll have members lining up at the door! Was lovely to see you both today, and although Maha did his best, (sorry mate!) he wasn't as cuddly as you... And he didn't kiss me either... must be a man thing...

Poor old lady next to me had fallen and smashed her ankle just as she was coming right from two knee replacements and was tired and sore and trying to sleep... She apologised to me later for growling so she's not a bad sort. Her daughter and daughter-in-law are lovely too... Her wee grand-daughter gave me a blueberry muffin!

I tell you, though, I get the best of treatment in here! All the nurses fussing over me, caressing my hands and feet, waited on with coffees and food, helped in the shower. Why didn't I do this years ago!

Oh, but the operation sounds a bit scary... Still, I might get down to 80kg yet!

Yeah, someone suggested Selley's No More Gaps, should work, eh? I'm gonna ask for a copy of the DVD...

Hey I can't even complain about the food! Lots of choice, dinner tonight was roast Pork and gravy with mashed spud... As for crazy, I think it too late for that...

They tell me I'll be good as new afterwards! Just not looking forward to the next week or so until the pain and discomfort subside...

Yeah I think I'll get another one of those self-medicating units where you press the button.

I wish I wasn't needing it but becoming paraplegic doesn't sound a great alternative..

I'm a big boy now, though, eh...?

Sweety, apart from the tossers, we ALL wish you weren't facing this crisis.

No such thing as a BigBoy in this situation dude, sometimes it's ok to feel like a helpless kid. In this case, its practically mandatory as you have so little control over the process. Information is good. Drive them nuts wanting to know EVERYTHING about the process ( if you havent already that is )

You and Jill have each other and that counts for a lot.

Thanks sweety! Yeah, I know, I have few questions to ask, important stuff like, "Can I have copies of the scans and x-rays and are you going to film it and if so can I please have a copy to show my friends..?"

The surgeon's, (yep two of them), were very open and informative and said to write anything down so I'd remember to ask when I see the anaethetist so I've got a couple or three on my notepad.

My darling wife is really being my rock right now, just wish I could be at home for the night and cuddle up before the op. Though if they do it Tuesday I'll get to see her tomorrow night.

My Mum's been txting me and I know she's concerned for me but she's down in Kawerau so will probably come up afterwards.

I just keep telling myself they're doing this sort of thing every day and they know what they're doing, so I'm sure I'll be fine...

Edbear so sorry to hear conservative treatment unsuccessfull, thinking of you...

The posterior/anterior approach sounds scarey but it allows good stabilisation with caging & bone grafts. You will have an opiate PCA(patient controlled analgesia) and Im sure you will be a model patient!

Im a Duty Manager at Burwood Hospital, and many years ago was Charge Nurse in the Spinal Unit
My ex-husband fractured T4 & T12/L1 in a motorbike crash way back in the 80's and had similar surgery to you....

Thank you so much for your kindness and practical offers of help last week after the quake.Thoughts are with you this week....love and best wishes

Ah, so you'll have seen it all then! Fascinating learning about it, for sure. Have a couple of issues to work through before surgery, now scheduled for Thurs. They've asked for my bone density scans for the Osteoporosis from an Illness I've been treated for.

I was happy to offer to help any way i could. My sister is working in one of the welfare centres down there now, 12hr shifts but finding it very rewarding.
