    Prison officer dead, WTF?

OK, it was always going to happen.

    Why?

Because prison officers (through their training) treat prisoners (aka fuckwit losers) like school kids.

You would not believe how softly they are forced to treat 'losers' the play-up or assualt prisoners.

Hammer the fuck-wit losers that play up in prison..

Prisoners have it too good. Damp dungeon and shackles would be better.

Pit of death is the best option. Cheapest too.

I know if I was a prison guard, I would'nt be treating prisoners 'aka' potential or existing gang members bad at all. It would only serve to come back on me in the end.....I kinda take the prison guards side on this one in regards to not treating them like shit.

First of my, condolences and respect to the two children (5 and 2 years old) and his wife who have been left behind. It is a terrible thing that has happened.

This thread is likely to spark a lot of extreme reactions. You need to remember a founding tenant (rightly or wrongly) of our corrections department is that you go to jail for a restriction in your freedom - not for punishment. So jail is only there to remove your freedom, nothing else. That's why they get nice heated floors, big plasma TVs, etc.

It seems obvious there has been a serious failure in the systems that have resulted in this persons death. I don't know what they are, and nor are we likely to know until an investigation is done.
It does seem obvious that something more needs to be done to protect those that work in our jails.

Who knows what he was in to? but if he was a good guy it's a hell of a loss for a thankless dangerous job... last thing i'd want is to be locked away in a box full of criminals... bravo for those that can do it...

Nah... just leave all of the doors open, let the officers watch on CCTV from the outside and sell the best bits for a reality TV show.. would be an awesome deterrent... as for food etc... just air drop it in with other "essential" supplies and leave the bastards to rip each other to pieces.

Shackle them up, get them out working, on roads, planting food, anything that will contribute to communities....a sort of 'penance' for lack of a better word, make them feel worthwhile.
It must cost heaps to the tax payer to keep them locked up, better make use of them because of their crimes, rather than lock them up and throw away the key. Most will likely have mental issues which will only get worse if treated like dogs.

School kids can kill people too.....

I'm all for hammering fuck-wit losers that play up in prison, it looks like this guy got the jump on 'em and played up right when he was arriving at the prison. The news reports I saw said that the guy smacked the guard in the head, and I was wondering how he could have been in a position to do that with sufficient force to cause death. There must be quite a few more details to come out, but that doesn't help the poor guard.

There's a fine line between punishment & rehabilitation. It also made me wonder why this guy was headed to springhill instead of waikeria.

They (prisoners) are treated waaaaay more le3niently for idiocy inside the prison than if they were on the street.

They've had their chances - Youth Aid, Probation etc - so no slack should be given for screw-ups while they are in prison, theiy're all loser leches on society.

I don't think the punch in the head killed him, it was the fall to the [presumably concrete] floor that cased a serious brain injury. The doctors said he would never recover from the brain injury, and his wife made the decision to turn off life support.

I think it was DangerousBastard that has recounted a story on here several times of a person who fell off their motorcycle in a driveway with no helmet and suffered a permanent brain injury.

bazza matthews said it was clear he was unconcious before his head smacked on the concrete floor. those that know, know that when this happens it can totally fuck your brain with internal bleeding etc.. his brain was fucked immediately when it smacked into the concrete. they also said the decision was made to turn off life support, so there was no brain activity.
What the prisoner did, was knock him out, causing death. however if it was during an unlock it hopefully will appear premeditated to a jury and this fuckface will do time for murder.
Murder in my book. Just wish I could be in Hamilton tommorrow to get my 2 cents in.
The whole idea of prison is for offenders to understand their crimes have CONSEQUENCES. It was a consequence to the extreme yesterday, but he could have been released, gotten on the piss in town, and assualted a member of public with the same CONSEQUENCE.

Simply the system is wrong, it should never have happened or even been possible but the feel good brigade has softened the system up so much it wont be long that home detention is the punishment for murder.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.

So there are a myriad of causes that could lead to a prison officer striking their head on a concrete floor from a height greater than 1.5 metres.

    Proceduraly something needs to change.

Stop treating 'em with kid gloves would be a good start.

i wonder what health and safety's take will be on preventing this from happening again, if everytime there is an assault, theres a chance of death if you fall to concrete ground in an unconscious state....

I like the way in america the prisoners have to put their hands outside the door to get them cuffed before they exit the cell, then again to remove them when they go bck into the cell. At all times outside the cell their hands are cuffed. This reduces the effectiveness of their hands in a fight.
