I don't agree that they are any bertter than NZ cops and the consequences of a mistake/overreaction on thier part tend to be much more severe on the civillain population than would be the case in NZ

I believe that for the most part they do believe in personal freedoms, and even if you are breaking a technicality, if they think that you are not impacting on anyone else then they let you be. One time I was in small town deep south, and behaving in a way that was typically kiwi, but wholly unusual for them. They scoped me out good, but never interfered.

It was only later that I realised that nobody walks along the footpath - only a vagrant (or a kiwi) wouldn't drive.

I've also been well pissed in a crowded area with a whole slew of other pissed ppl and a bunch of cops on horseback, and carrying great big fuck off guns. I've never felt safer amongst fellow drunkards.

Fuck all the waffle above - I was commenting about the death of a prison officer and the soft treatment of those CONVICTED and sentenced to prison.

And the lack of penalty to those convicted losers if they behaved like dicks while in prison.

This thread is likely to spark a lot of extreme reactions. You need to remember a founding tenant (rightly or wrongly) of our corrections department is that you go to jail for a restriction in your freedom - not for punishment.
Sir Geoffrey Palmer once said that people go to jail AS punishment, not FOR punishment. This was said in response to a question about why prisoners are treated so well in jail.

    So there.

Big mistake of Mr Geoffrey Palmer.

Most of NZ want to see jail as a punishment througout the sentence....

He's been charged with assault - WTF another example of NZ pussyfooting PC crap

Again in the States you see the convicted dicks chained up in orange overalls picking up litter from beside the interstate. Fuckers serve the time they are sentenced to as well. Problem is the wannabes & gangbangers see the movies & vids etc coming out of the states and emulate that behaviour, and NZ continues with the liberal pussy PC bullshit in response. Then the government passes laws to target the white middle class male to pay for all of their bullshit programs, because that's what they blame for causing the demographic imbalance in the prison population.

Cos a vast amount of those there have had a chance to sort their shit out well before they end up in 'Moron Mansion".

Some time ago I was in Atlanta, where a favourite leisure pasttime is slow rafting on the Chattahoochee river. There are wardens who putt up and down watching the activities. Even these guys are carrying sidearms. You will be pulled up at gunpoint for drinking out of glass bottles (only cans allowed). Sorry, back to topic.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
