Kinda unrelated, but it reminded me of this:

Creating gravel from large boulders would be a start.

Why can't crims be used to mix cement and manufacture median barrier sections? Surely that is possible?

Society wins by being able to put proper median barriers where cheesecutters would otherwise be installed.

it is possible, but would you beleive the crims tell the govt how THEY want to be treated in prison?. I dont think the crims will volunteer for hard labour.

Hey, maybe instead of sentenceing crims to x months in prison, they could be sentanced to y hours in the prison workhouse and they stay locked up until they're done.

yep ive discussed that with friends. unfortunately none of them are influential enough for law reform/change.
x number of hours as sentence for hard labour. and any crims doing release to work programmes, all money goes to victims of crime, and insurance companies to keep our premiums down. also burglars should get a hand chopped off, coz they seem to just keep doing it, and there are some scary stories about the ultimate rush they get doing the burgs while people are home or asleep.
i think i want to get a dog. a big fuck off dog. a big, "hey boy, you hungry?", "no thanks I already ate some testicles", kinda dog.

Jesus, what a load of reactionary waffling crap!

Sorry about the Prison Officer - taken down by a king hit from a young Killer Bees gang member.

I would assume the charge will be manslaughter - so he'll stay in prison for 10 more years and be regarded as a "hero" among many of the less enlightened! Don't think he'll have an easy life though - warders can be very unforgiving..........for all those who think prison is paradise - obviously haven't actually been there - to me Sky TV would be punishment, not a luxury.....

Over here, due to the number of "one hit" killings in the street (carried out, mainly, by young pissed white boys) they changed the law to bring in an automatic murder charge - with the possibility of reduction to manslaughter only under "very extenuating circumstances"

Yes - a lot of people in prison are retarded dropkicks - a pity the government axed any of the rehab programs that were actually working - I guess the lock 'em up on hard labour and throw away the key brigade have ideal conditions over there at the moment - the comments on KB recently certainly seem to bear this out..............

As has already been said, if the dropkick is from the killer wannabes then he has probably come to the attention of the authorites more than once before. Why not lock him up and throw away the key? He's had plenty enough chances already.

Oh wait, all those previous encounters with the system show that the system has let him down....

So far the only charge he faces is assault, not manslaughter.

He was being transferred to max security because he had been reclassified after a "series of misconducts". Just how many chances do you want to give him?
    Keep on chooglin'

It is a very sad affair, the guy had only worked for corrections for a short period. I don't know specifics of the case, as the media always seems to paint a quite different picture to the actuality.
I do agree that stricter controls in handling prisoners needs to be implemented. Obviously every job has its risk and dangers, however in a role such as this, there definitely needs to be some serious PPE, (Personal protection Equipment).
In my view, Prison Officers should have a minimum of stab proof vests, pepper spray and or possibly tazers or battons. These should be worn at all times. I also think it would be prudent to have head gear whilst working or moving prisoners.

It has been said that the prison sentence is the punishment, and this is true. Prisoners are not placed in prison to be punished further. I think the USA and other western cultures who have played with the systems a bit have the right idea. Spend the minimum on incarceration, don't waste money on programs and rehabilitation that costs a fortune, and gets marginal results. Prisoners are incarcerated for the protection of society, it's up to the individual in my view to change their behavior. Why should the tax payer have to pay for their entertainment and time passing opportunities....
I have alot to say on this topic, but am being very reserved at this point. I hope that Corrections do seriously look at safety very closely. It's vital that every practicable step possible is taken to maximize safety, even over cost..... Private sector would be highly scrutinized for fatality on the job, I am sure this event will be similar.....
I am freindly really, I only bite when provoked
