Hyosung GT650R Pro Twin set up

Hey guys. Just posting to see if anyone in the Wellington area knows much about suspension set up and could be bothered giving me a hand setting up my pro twin for my weight and riding style etc.

This bike is a 2002 GT650R and is surprisingly pretty fast for a Pro Twin. It just handles like the pig it looks like at the moment. It's heavy and I wont be able to get around that but the suspension can be fixed. Basically the front end wasn't stopping me from braking reasonably hard and didn't feel too bad but the rear suspension was all over the show. Mid corner it was like riding a wave, it would wallow around. It also seemed to squat as soon as I hit the gas and I couldn't get the front end to stop skipping exiting a corner.

I am new to racing at Manfeild and it was my first time riding the bike, and on the race day I only got down to 1.21 short track - which I was disappointed with as I was roughly 2 seconds faster at the test day. I just can't race for peanuts in the wet (never used wets before) and the 5 lap races I hardly got a chance to relax and get used to it however I was dropping a few tenths every lap in both races.

I am short as hell on cash as I am a student who has literally poored my life savings into this. I have had a years bucket racing experience which has gone really well for me and my riding and I own an R6 which I have done track days on, and believe it or not the rear suspension on my R6 is crap but I haven't under-steered out of corners like I was at VMCC round 1 and I wasn't even pulling awesome lap times.

    Cheers guys, any help appreciated!

I know billy's '06 gt650 has a ZX10 shock on it, Since your strapped for cash ohlins,WP ect are ruled out, but somthing like a gixxer shock might work well, as they have more adjustment. Give Ken at Hyosung NZ a call, he's very expirienced with racing and the bikes so he'll have a good idea of what you need.

mate you have to be careful tho with shocks as you can put one thats to short for the bike in and actually make it worse to.

Your stock shock really aint going to cut the mustard and the front I dont know much about wether or not they are damper rod or cartridge but if it was damper rod the Racetech Emulators are the way to go.

Really the best option is Ohlins or similar but if your tight for cash that gets hard.

PM Robert Taylor he is really your best bet to talk to as he is a suspension guy you have to be careful fucking about with some advice cause some people tinker for the hell of it and end of the day its your life on the line if it all fucks up

Will your R6 rear shock fit ?

To be honest I would PM Robert Taylor (if he isn't replying soon.......) and ask him for advice.

If an Ohlins is not affordable at this time, he might be able to suggest an alternative option.

The hyo shock is a better boat anchor than a shock. Whoever (the manufacturer) thought it was wise to build their own shock rather than fit a known-quantity one needs their head read.

Early 1990s GSXR 1100 shock fits, as well as the ZX-10 shock. Both will be eons ahead of the stock one. Spring rate I was told should be 120N, but I would be interested to hear what works for you.

    I would think that should be 12.0 N not 120 N.
I too have heard that the ZX10 unit fits, but it will probably need revalving and respringing to work on the GT as the bikes are different.
But as RT says, doing that on an OEM shock might not be trivial.

I put a GSXR1100WP shock on my 650R and it fits ok - was way too soft. I took it off and put it on a GT250R and it was much better than the stock shock. I was told it needed a 120N spring for the 650R. Maybe a typo.

I also have a WP shock (to fit GSXR1100WP) in the junk box, ready to rebuild, but can't justify the spendies at the moment.
