    Question Cat doors

Locked myself out today and remembered i'd not put the chain on the back door so I thought maybe i'll try the cat door so I reached my arm through the cat door and was able to turn the door open in the kitchen and I was anle to get in.

Then I found myself thinking are cat doors really safe if I could do that anyone could and get in while I was out

nooooo, just think of it as you having very special arms, the only arms that can reach... they could just kick the door in too
    I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!

Or you could just put the chain on.

They're supposed to be lockable. Though that wouldn't do much if someone decided to kick it in anyway.
Stuff the cat, get a dog! A big grumpy one with nice teef.
And board up the cat door. Silly cats.

Sounds like the cat door is poorly positioned relative to the door lock. Perhaps consider a dead lock.

On a side note, I had to get an electronic cat door - had the neighbourhood cats raiding the food supply and I was going through a crazy amount of cat food.

I say good on any thief that takes on a cat flap, shit when we got done they jemmied a ranch slider. There was a cat flap available, but they took the easy route and did the big glass door.

Yes the cat flap should be furtherest from the door lock (ours was) but ultimately it will make no difference, if they want to get in they will

I always make sure the doors are locked when I go out during the day and at night time how this happen was went out the kitchen way a left keys on bench usually go out front door way.

Isn't that why they call them "cat burglars"?

Ye that must be why,ha,ha. Seriously get a deadbolt. Although most doors / windows in this country could be forced open with a crowbar. Get an alarm ,help slightly as a deterent. a BIG nasty dog helps too but may eat your cat.

what, and properly lock yourself out? This is a way to get back in silly! Seriously, if they want in, a cat door isn't going to be the determining factor

Positioning of the cat flap compared to access to locks is important to consider. An acquaintance of ours years ago went through a spate of the neighbourhood kids using his to gain access to his house. He was hit a number of times before getting an alarm. (He didn't own a cat, the flap was already there when he moved into the house).

Gremlin is right, if they want in (burglars that is, not the cat) then a cat door won't be a consideration. However it is a handy option for the opportunist theif, especially if it's in a handily concealed door to the house.
