Obviously none of us have seen all the footage, but, let us not forget he was a Police officer, in the states (how many Police are killed there each year, let alone assulted). He was on his own, a crowd of people around him, hands everywhere, he gets disorientated, an arm comes at him (he knows there is more people to his right)...... I am confident that he felt he was about to be attacked.
