I thought it was a given that you don't put in a cat door in a position that you can open a door like that. My cat door is in the ranch slider - not the door that slides - poor little buggar, occassionally runs into it when the door is open - she's even gone out the open door, and then decided to come back in via her door - funny really...... but mostly we make sure it doesn't overlap her door.

perhaps you could invent a new cat door... one that closes (using a guillotine edged slider) when the door handle is turned...
    I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!

Then I found myself thinking are cat doors really safe if I could do that anyone could and get in while I was out
There is no way anyone can reach the door knob through the cat door here, trust me, I had a look at it today. Locked the door on the way out, keys still inside, no windows open, Anne is in Thames two hours away at least.
Lucky for me, I parked the van not that close to the garage door as I normally would, van was unlocked, so I pressed the garage door opener and it gave me just enough room to squeeze under. First attempt was not a happening thing, I started looking for a school kid (maybe chuck em' under) but had another go and made it so crisis solved.

I never knew that but then again most animals sit down as soon as I enter the room or make darn sure they are facing me (and growling).... It must be my after shave...
