I cant help but think its going to be an overweight lemon. The bike I mean - not Nick.
To have a crank strong enough to handle that firing order AND have an electric motor to keep it turning sounds like the dumbest idea since Yamaha claiming exup increases torque. I wonder how heavy the balance shaft will be.
In all fairness Steve EXUP does increase torque but only at low rpm where the butterfly valves restrict reverse pressure waves that at that rpm will have a negative effect during valve overlap. Typically where you see a hole in the torque curve, that hole or depression gets largely filled in. but at mid range and higher rpm the EXUP valve restricts flow and reduces midrange and higher range torque. The difference in fitting a free flow aftermarket exhaust that deletes the EXUP valve can be substanial, much more mid and upper torque but with a substanial hole in the low end delivery.
I recall fitting a full Arrow system to a first generation R1 a few years back. Whilst I cant remember the torque figures peak horsepower with the standard exhaust was around 120 with a nice flat torque curve. Simply fitting the pipe with no other changes yielded a loss of low end but much more mid and upper, yielding 145bhp corrected.
Excess weight is a big penalty with the current R1 so if the ''long bang'' concept is going to further catch on the challenge for manufacturers is going to be to ''add lightness''
Yamaha Motor Co certainly have in more recent years assumed the mantle of being the innovators of the industry, at least amongst the Japanese manufacturers. Even if they dont get it right first time they have the guts to go for it.
True Robert, I was meaning that to get maximum torque you dont block off the exhaust, it is the only way manufacturers can get the noise limit down enough. I still think the zx10 idea is a bit to weird for people too accept, the big thing about the R1 is that its "unique and sortoff like Rossi's". I hope for Kawasaki it works as they can bring out some weapons, it just seems too different for a street bike at this time. The gtr1000 I think it was called had the same issue?
haha is this tha same Kawasaki heavy industries that make the engines for big heay shipping and engines for the cruise missiles?
but seriously as I said on face book, congrats! You have been flying the banner for the green machine and you have been rewarded! I am sure you will be a good ambasador for the RDR!
Theres not much wrong with the BP product and its my fuel of choice given that it is predominantly a British owned company and I unashamedly have an affinity for the country of my forebears, as recent as my grandfather. Interesting to note that given all of the caustic criticism levelled directly at the British by President Oblamer BP is 45% owned by American interests. Also very interesting that the company subcontracted to do the drilling is an American company using American equipment.
Sorry off subject but it just illustrates that news reports and emotive comments are too often one sided. The spillage is totally inexcusable but theres a lot of hypocrisy and grandstanding going on.
Id be interested to know what is the fuel of choice for those that care to answer?
Apparently the rig was registered in the Marshall Islands as they have a less stringent certification process than if it had been US registered, can't help but suspect the whole things an anti US plot on their part maybe the US should nuke the F^#&ers and teach them a lesson.
